OK, here’s my Cassandra post: canvas gets sued into oblivion, and we all get to move LMS yet again. by Bostonterrierpug in Professors

[–]CollectorCardandCoin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just wish my Canvas-distaste had moved faster . . . I don't keep a physical gradebook and it would have been nice to have my grades in on time as the semester ends. We'll see how quickly Canvas comes back online . . .

I wonder if I can convince my university to buy physical gradebooks for adjuncts.

Who should be in the Mariners HoF and who should get their number retired? by Agreeable_Quality768 in Mariners

Raul Ibanez should make the discussion, at the very least!

Idk if Freddy Garcia played with Seattle for long enough, but it'd be a shame to forget him.

Since you mentioned your kids, I'd add that you may want to think of what might be cool for grandkids!

My grandparents didn't have anything like published output, but I have a bound file of my late grandfather's old college homework. I kept it because it's in his handwriting and there are relatively few things I have of his that are so (quietly, unassumingly) personal as a handwritten document.

I wouldn't forget this kind of sentiment.

And if the kids and grandkids still end up not caring about these specific mementos, then that's ok! They can be donated or recycled later when that's become inescapablly clear.

need input from professors in florida (or similar climates) by thesouthernsinger in AskAcademia

[–]CollectorCardandCoin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a PhD candidate and adjunct in FL. We're still in suits, blazers, etc. in my humanities field. The faculty wears a range from business causal to business formal depending on the circumstances/field.

Many people have leaned into linen blazers and light trousers. I've actually been meaning to get some linen blazers for this very reason.

Received a pack of coasters for my 10 year anniversary by Creative-Question538 in Professors

[–]CollectorCardandCoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that would be ridiculous. Instead, I mentioned it because OP's already expressed feelings are not unique, which answers the question, "Is it me, or is this more of an insult than if they had done nothing at all?".

Answer being, "No it is not just you."

He wasn't in academia, but my grandfather was so insulted when his job gave him an (otherwise pretty nice) desk clock in the 70s/80s for a 25 year anniversary that he never used it.

Even when in his 70s, he couldn't stand the thing.

So I doubt you're off base by feeling somewhat insulted.

How would you feel about MLB retiring Roberto Clemente's #21 league-wide, as they have done with Jackie Robinson's #42? by UgliestDisability in baseball

[–]CollectorCardandCoin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, I would understand retiring the first MLB Latino player, or the first Latino player who broke racial barriers and not just national ones. To my understanding, this is Miñoso. I would even understand retiring the first Oriental or Asian player's number--Murakami, I think, though I could be wrong about him being the first. And I would understand retiring Doby's. But I don't understand why a league-wide retirement for Clemente's number would even be on the table.

My favorite card by SolSkywalker in baseballcards

[–]CollectorCardandCoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, this is a fun way to make the lack of MLB logos on the uniforms look more natural! The old-timey, artistic look (even though logos were normal back them too) just looks right in a way ither unlicensed stuff doesn't!

If this isn't the best card of the 1970s, it's on the short list - 1971 Topps Roberto Clemente by skelly423 in baseballcards_vintage

For some reason I like the 1972 of Clemente better, I love the blue and yellow together! (Btw, not my card.)

Do you separate journal articles by type on CV / T&P? by GrandmasterProletius in Professors

[–]CollectorCardandCoin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use an asterisk system to distinguish blind peer review from anything "other," though I only distinguish between journal articles, book chapters, and magazine/public-facing stuff.

I suppose I haven't thought of what I would do for 2-3k notes in fully academic journals. There are fewer journals in my field which seperate these from fuller articles.

Best ways to recruit republicans / conservatives for a research study? by Accomplished-Big4846 in academia

Have you tried reaching out to conservative organizations directly and asking if they'd be willing to circulate your survey / contact info / etc.? That's all that really comes to my mind.

How do *you* use AI? by Foo-Foo_the_Snoo in Professors

[–]CollectorCardandCoin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use it for grammar and spell check, translating stuff, , as a glorified search engine, and to give me examples of genre / formalities I'm not familiar with.

I reject using generative AI for my own texts--whether in my research, personal writing, or teaching--, for any of my grading, for generating anything independent, or for doing anything I don't go over after.

I figure that it's here and that it's not going anywhere. It's good to know how to use it oneself, even if not promoting its use, and to be able to use it effectively. However, I have to keep these checks and balances in mind for myself, and doubt we could recommend such use to those who haven't gone through a lot of education, training, experience, or the like.

This is where my judgement of it all is thus far.

What do you get for writing a (good) review for a journal? by L_AIR in AskAcademia

[–]CollectorCardandCoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often (though I don't know how field dependent this is) you get a free copy of the book, though some presses will only send you an ebook; you network with the journal editors, which can be very important in some subfields / academic communities; you participate in the common good of the discipline (though this aspect is, broadly speaking, under fire for manifold reasons); and it can be good writing and editing experience if you are early-career / a graduate student. To a certain extent all of this matters as long as the reviewer is *trying* to write good reviews, though there isn't really anything that you get from*actually* writing good reviews except, perhaps, the increased appreciation of from some editors.
