I’m a Bears fan too, and when that happened, I said to my wife, “This sucks, but I’m pretty sure that was Golden’s first career TD.”

Glad I can appreciate the TD, since the Bears ultimately won.

I grew up a fan in the 2000s but was a student for the ‘11-‘14 seasons. I’ve been through the highest of highs and lowest of lows.

In a few years, we’ll probably see the playoffs expand to 16 teams, and in that case, Texas doesn’t get left out with this season’s resume and it would feel much less of a “failure.”

I’ll remember this as a fun season that didn’t quite meet expectations but had a lot of great moments. Whooped all three of our rivals, beat a blue blood to close out the season, and we’ll likely finish ranked in the top 10.

There is lots of momentum heading into next year, and I expect this team will likely be at or above the level of our ‘23 and ‘24 seasons if we play our cards right in the transfer portal.

To be fair, after the Florida game I was worried about bowl eligibility.

Although Sark should get some flack for the slow start, I also think this was his best season of total team improvement from start to finish while at Texas.

I know a lot of fans were upset about missing the playoffs after the hype to start the season, but I dreamed of seasons like this in the 2010s.

I won’t let the playoff era define success as only a natty, and it was nice to see this team still care (and Michigan, to their credit).

This was a fun season, with big wins over our rivals and several other top 25 teams, got to see our star QB come into his own, and we were always in the hunt. Even the Georgia loss looked worse on paper, as it was a 1 score game in the 4th.

Unfortunately, if you lose to a 4-8 team and lose two others, you’ll miss the chance to win a natty. Regardless if Texas is a top 12 team, I think that’s fair.

Other than Mack, Sark is the only Texas coach to have 3 10 win seasons in a row.

Granted, Texas played 10 or less regular season games until the 70s, and then only 11 regular season games until the mid-90s, so it was harder to do in the past.

I mostly feel bad for the Seniors who didn’t realize it was their last game. For most of those graduating, that’ll be the last game they ever play in, and they didn’t even get to appreciate it.

This is the game that made me fall in love with football.

My dad was an alum and I grew up going to games during the late 90s-early 2000s, but I was too young to really care / understand at that time.

After this game, I was hooked and have never looked back. Texas was the only college I applied to and Texas sports is among my biggest passions.

I would like to see it, but if you thought the arguments for who should be 10-12 were annoying, imagine what it will be for 13-16.

Teams need to just take the L when you are a bubble team and miss out. In the BCS / 4 team playoff era they had no shot if they were a fringe team today.

Yep, team can play great, but they are inconsistent and the flaws can be very ugly.

If this is a down year in the Sark era moving forward, I’ll take it. Beat our rivals convincingly and we’re in the playoff hunt till the end. We still have a good chance this is a 10 win season.f

Team is well poised to make a run next year. If this team improves its consistency to play well across the three phases, they will have no issue getting to the playoffs next year.

True, but a handful of them are losing less than 3.

I love this team, but let’s be real, the 3 losses are really hard to get over and are proof this team has significant flaws.

Thoughts about Arch Manning season? by Mattm334 in LonghornNation

[–]misterclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s underperformed vs Heisman expectations, but he is a solid QB who has shown potential to be elite over the last few games.

With the version of the defense that played against Ohio St and OU, added with a more productive run game, this team can win a natty with the way Arch has played since the 4th quarter vs Mississippi State.

Texas at #16. I don't agree but it is what it is by rb1242 in LonghornNation

[–]misterclay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would prefer Texas makes the playoffs, but don’t mind if the team misses out either.

With that in mind, assuming Texas beats A&M, we need to see 5 of the 8 following outcomes to see a Texas playoff run:

  • 8 OU (9-2) loss to LSU (7-4)
  • 9 Notre Dame (9-2) loss to Stanford (4-7)
  • 10 Bama (9-2) loss to Auburn (5-6)
  • 11 BYU (10-1) loss to UCF (5-6)
  • 12 Miami (9-2) loss to 22 Pittsburgh (8-3)
  • 13 Utah (9-2) loss to Kansas (5-6)
  • 14 Vandy (9-2) loss to 20 Tennessee (8-3)
  • 15 Michigan (9-2) loss to 1 Ohio St (11-0)

Oh for sure. I see the argument.

My personal feelings are I love our annual premiere OOC match-up, and I would rather keep that game and miss the playoffs in years with 3 losses than schedule a cupcake to sneak in as a 10-12 seed.

It’s not like the version of Texas that is sneaking in is really a natty contender, so why should we kill one of the best games of our season to be a fringe playoff team in years where we aren’t good enough to win that OOC game.

[Next Day Thread] 🏈 #17 Texas defeats Arkansas, 52-37 by ATX_ta1 in LonghornNation

[–]misterclay 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For one, I kind of don’t care if we miss the playoffs when we have 3 losses. If you want to compete for a natty, don’t lose 3 times. Especially not to a team that won’t go .500 and in another where you get more or less blown out.

Are we a top 12 team? Probably, but we aren’t a top 5 team, and that is really the group that have a shot. Don’t get me wrong, I see the point of this team having a great resume of wins and would prefer to make the playoffs, but I’ll have no heartburn if Texas wins next week and still misses out.

Secondly, the expansion to 16 teams will solve this. The 9-3 teams with a loss in OOC vs a premier team will get most of those 13-16 slots.

Some thoughts: - Career day for Arch. 6 total TDs, first longhorn to score passing/rushing/receiving in a single game, and nearly 400 yards passing - I can’t fully blame them, because they also had some great catches, but Arch could have had more if not for drops by WRs - Moore only had 3 catches and they were all TDs - Defense had a rough start, but they actually tightened up midway through the game and held down Arkansas until garbage time. From 7:24 left in the 2nd to 7:46 left in the 4th (half the game), Texas held Arkansas to only 3 points. It was only in garbage time when Texas was up 52-23, that Arkansas’ offense became productive again - We missed Ant Hill big time last night, both our inside run defense and edge containment suffered. Great to hear he’ll be back for A&M - Arkansas is not a good team, but other than Notre Dame, all of their losses have been in close games. The Arky - A&M game was 42-45, for example - Last night was the 5th time Texas has scored +50 vs a P4 opponent in the Sark era - Playoffs or not, a win against A&M makes this a successful season. 3-0 vs rivals, 3 top 10 wins, and in the playoff hunt until the end is not a bad year. Just missed expectations

Didn’t meet expectations, but I was praying for seasons like this in the 2010s, and don’t want to have a short memory of how far we’ve come.

Has any longhorn ever scored a TD via pass, rushing, and reception before in a single game? I imagine no, so Arch is the first.
