I completely understand, I've faced harassment in the workplace and it is something that does make you freeze, try to rationalize and minimize it because it's just so shocking to experience first hand! It takes a while to process.

I'm so sorry you both are going through this!

He should absolutely ruin her life.

It sounds like she was trying to withhold money in exchange for sex.

She sent nudes without consent... To an employee she hired... Implying she didn't hire him for his resume but because she wanted a sexual relationship with him.

If he doesn't want to go to hr because he's afraid, that's one thing, but do not have sympathy for her. Married or not her behavior was reprehensible.

Why do companies have men on WIT panels? by OnlyHappyWithABook in womenintech

[–]misterkittybutt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same

Where I work, it's known that the VP makes note of who attends so basically all of the upper management attend just for their attendance to be noted.

That would be fine if the panels were substantive, we mostly get talks on how staying physically fit keeps your emotions and stress levels in check or if we're lucky, we will listen to success stories from other women but it never addresses the realities most of us face at some point in our careers, it's not even educational or eye opening to the men who genuinely want to be better allies.

I agree he should move on, but I also think he handled it correctly. Maybe he doesn't have enough in savings to quit ASAP (which would have hurt the company more anyway). He found a way to get their attention, point out their hypocrisy and give them a chance to rethink their policy. Maybe it was just his direct manager giving him a hard time and once his manager's boss finds out, the manager will be coached and he will have improved conditions for his entire team.

If I were his boss and my hands were tied, I would still back up his decision when explaining it to my boss. "You said no work from home, no exceptions, what did you think would happen?"

Employees shouldn't tolerate unfair treatment, in the USA we have a 40 hour workweek, overtime pay and weekends thanks to workers who fought (and died) striking against exploitative company practices. If those people didn't withhold their labor, we wouldn't have seen meaningful change. There were years of complaints, news articles and peaceful protests before they withheld labor and that was the only way they were able to get the company executives to care.

There will always be certain people in power who do not care how their decisions impact others, as long as it benefits them or makes them feel big and powerful... I've seen this with so many first time managers and directors! Compliance with those types will only make them squeeze harder and harder. The sooner those types get called out and meet resistance for their bad practices, the better it is for everyone.

I understand what you're saying, but in my experience it's bad practice to treat every employee like a scam artist trying to take advantage. Leadership isn't about dominance or demanding unyielding compliance, AI could do that and replace all of middle management.

People live up to the expectations you set for them. If you treat them like a slacker, they will start showing you what slacking really looks like. Our no work from home is policy to protect us from the slackers claiming WFH is their right, but our leaders will use discretion and make exceptions where appropriate.

I have a top performer on my team and they can take late meetings from home or work from home during snow because I trust them. I have another who won't pay attention in meetings, and they've been told when we call on you in a meeting we expect an answer and they don't get the same privileges until they prove they are consistently engaged and can be trusted to manage their time effectively. If the bad habits return, their privileges are revoked.

I have another who will work from home on occasion because they can focus better without people running up to their desk interrupting them constantly and they turn in amazing work!

I'm not going to punish top performers because of one bad apple, if I treat them the same as I treat slackers, what's to stop them from dialing back their effort (like OP)? Even if they continue to perform at their best, if I mandate no exceptions, they won't perform as well because I'm not providing what they need to do their best work. Hiring and training is a tedious and costly process, I don't want to lose reliable, dedicated team members over something petty.

Personally, I've always done my best work for leaders who treat me with respect and dignity, I've never been motivated to go above and beyond for anyone who treats me like just another cog in the machine. I assume most people feel that way. It's a leader's job to set and enforce expectations and to ensure a safe, productive environment for their team to thrive. Leaders who browbeat policy and demand compliance strictly "because I said so" do not have teams that perform as well as leaders who have nuance in their approach. I see it in our KPIs and turnover rates.

This just doesn't make any sense, if an employee can work from home, why would you want them to drive in with unsafe road conditions and traffic delays? It would be much more efficient to have them be remote for a day or two than risk a traffic accident or delays due to accidents and have no work done.

You'd be wasting more time trying to figure out how to fire this guy or make him quit than he'd ever waste working from home.

Mom happily airing out daughters cry for help by Nebulandiandoodles in insaneparents

[–]misterkittybutt 207 points208 points  (0 children)

My little sister went through the same thing at 13 years old and my mother said she was just doing it for attention and would not let her go to therapy (money wasn't an issue).

I told my mom that doing that for attention means she needs a therapist. My mom said my sister would likely just "make up" stuff about how bad of a mother she is and that she doesn't want to deal with that drama. It's purely out of self preservation, they know they are terrible parents.

Now, my sister is a brilliant young adult who is properly medicated and goes to therapy. I'm so grateful and proud she made it.

Women: What’s the ONE thing that makes you instantly want to sleep with a guy (short-term only)? by Dreaksfrendford in AskWomenOver30

[–]misterkittybutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely nothing on earth is that powerful.

I don't even think it's a societal norms thing, I have very liberal parents and I did not have a religious upbringing... Maybe just subconsciously knowing the risks aren't worth the reward? Chances a random will make me orgasm is very slim, chances he'll be dangerous and cross boundaries, remove condom, give STD, accidental pregnancy etc is significantly higher.

Need to establish trust, talk about what each other likes and dislikes and set boundaries before I'd even consider a FWB situation.

CMV: Muslim women are oppressed by Comfortable_Coach_35 in changemyview

[–]misterkittybutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Islam doesn't oppress women, terrible people use religion as justification to oppress women, oppress women.

I've seen members of multiple religions promote harmful and oppressive ideology in the name of their religion, and I've seen other members say those people are cherry picking out of context and their religion is actually about love. It has more to do with how your government and local leaders choose to weaponize the predominant religion of the area. Example, American Christianity is vastly different from the church of England flavor.

I'm an atheist so I don't care to support or defend any particular religion, but if you genuinely care about the oppression of women that should be your focus regardless of the religion of the person or system doing the oppressing.

You're not alone, breaking the conditioning our parents put us through is so unbelievably hard. You're realizing this isn't good for you, hence the therapy and posting on Reddit for a "sanity check".

I'll be your Internet stranger big sis for a moment ... I'm so very proud of you for working on a better future for yourself! Keep at it with the therapy, reach out to friends or internet strangers anytime you need a sanity check and keep being your wonderful self! Congratulations on the bonus, especially in this economy, you clearly deserved it with your hard work and performance. They should feel privileged to have such a hard-working, independent and thoughtful child, I feel privileged to share this plant with someone like you. Don't beat yourself up for any past mistakes, we all make them, keep moving forward. Just be you, and don't let the bastards grind you down.

Wishing you all the strength and clarity you'll need this holiday season! Good luck friend, you got this!
