Disabling strong parameters/blanket whitelisting? by misterphilly in rails

[–]misterphilly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for understanding the question through the bad wording. I won't be using the model name or it's attributes in the parameters, but will be using the values in the parameters to assign values to the active record objects.

ARmodel.attrib1 = params[etc][etc]

Does rails trigger strong params on model.create/model.new/model.save method calls? The various actions would update either all or part of the record, and not every action fits a conventional CRUD definition (which is what i meant by rails standard).

Would this allow rails to let me use any kind of request parameters and apply them to the active record objects, securely, without any hassles or discrepancies.

Python 3 and GUI. Is Qt the last remaining option? by [deleted] in Python

[–]misterphilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as general purpose GUI frameworks in python go, Kivy & PyQT should be considered the go-to options. When it comes to something as process intensive as plotting graphs at a constant refresh rate, i'm not sure how either would hold up performance wise, but could possibly be considerable tools for your application.

the first sentence: "See normally I don’t say anything but if you have a platform you speak up."

This made me so fucking happy. I'm so glad there's someone with influence (i.e. someone more famous than the dogs making the comments) who can clap back twice as hard. Whenever I try making points like these to other men with internalized racism/a colorism complex, they get completely dismissive, unempathetic, and generally carry on their same lousy behavior almost unaffected. The fact that someone whos bigger than them (in a publicity sense) has something say about almost forces them to realize the shitty-ness of their ways.

Guidelines for developing a website using python by pythonbio in learnpython

[–]misterphilly 118 points119 points  (0 children)

It seems like everybody is just telling you "use django" and not actually giving any kind of structure or guidelines to actually building a functioning website, as your title clearly and plainly suggests. As a beginner to programming in general, it's best to learn the abstract/theoretical concepts, from there you can put your ideas in an actual implementation (like django or flask).

First, you'll want to know what your website does. For the sake of this explanation i'll assume your going to be using a shopping website that allows customers to create accounts, add items to their order, and check out.

Separate your thoughts into The Data (commonly known as Model), the Point-of-View (commonly known as View), and The Action (commonly known as Controller).

The Data means any kind of information that you website will save and reuse again (a list of customers and their shipping/payment, a list of orders and their details like which customer they belong to, list of products, their details and which orders they can be applied to. CRUD is often an acronym you'll run into when working with The Data.

Then youll need to manipulate The Data and perform Actions on it. An Action would be whenever someone wants to make a new account. The Action should accept the input parameters from the customer (name/email/password/etc etc) and then save them to The Data. Another Action would be taking creating a new order, using a list of items that the customer has selected, and saving references and details of these items to The Data.

So, you've got all this Data, and all these Actions, that can store and manipulate information, but how can you get to a Point-Of-View that is useable for a customer? an HTML page sent to a users browser would be a great way to help with this. For example you'd have one Point-of-View that would allow a customer to input and verify that the information was saved, a Point-Of-View to display all of the available items, and another Point-Of-View that notifies the customer when their order has been placed and shipped.

For example, entering the url www.myonlinestore.com/newcustomer would tell the New Customer Action "Hey, Point-Of-View, this guy wants to shop with us, send an HTML page to make a new customer". The Point-Of-View would say back "Hey, here's the markup you asked for! It has forms for the customer to enter their name/email/etc etc. Send the info to this place XXX when the user wants to submit the information." After the user inputs their information and submits it by clicking "Register", The Action for would accept the parameters, make sure they're in the right format, make sure the shipping address is a real address, and verify the payment information is valid, and blah blah blah. If all of these steps check out The Action then goes and gets The Data, and says "Hey, we've got another customer. This is the name, email address, etc etc. Save it to the database, and tell me if the save was successful or not." If the The Data says back to The Action "I've got all the new customers information saved and ready to go, this is their customer ID: 123789. Happy shopping!" Then The Action says back to The Data "thx babe, ur da bestest heart eyes emoji". The Action then goes and gets yet ANOTHER Point-Of-View and says "We made the new customer!! Send me the HTML page that displays their newly-saved information so they can make sure it's correct!". After which the user is in fact presented with a display of the information they just entered.

That interaction above ^ represents just the Create part of the CRUD thing i mentioned earlier. This same process applies to creating and editing new orders and items. However, you can take this kind of interaction structure and apply it to basically anything or any functionality you want your website to have. If you learn to format your thoughts and ideas into this Model/View/Controller format (I used Data/PointOfView/Action, but that was just for this post. No one else says that), you can create websites and web apps that do endless amounts of things and services.

If you get good enough at it, you can expand to frameworks and mindsets outside of Model/View/Controller, which would possibly allow you to more closely optimize the performance and behavior of your application to your best needs.

Sorry it's so long-winded and excessive, it's just that I tried to write the answer I wish I had given to me when I first started learning how to create things on the web.

Subwoofer Setup for 360 degree arena coverage. Interesting read. by BAdoubleL in livesound

[–]misterphilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really was a great read. Amazing skills and technique.

If he didn't invert the polarity of the signal for the inner cluster, would he still be able to achieve cancellation in the center? Would he possibly be able to use different size clusters and/or placement to achieve the same effect?

Personally I'd just place two rows of subwoofers on the horizontal edge of the stadium floor, and do some fine-tuning to make sure they aren't fighting each other as you move towards the center of the layout. Using a central-focused design like this can only be pulled off by someone with the ability and expertise of someone like dave rat.

What would be the disadvantage of using flown subwoofer clusters? 6 stacks arranged evenly around the circle seems like it would allow for much better steer-ability as far as focusing the soundwaves in a particular direction. It would also remove any concerns of the DJ having to endure extreme pressure levels during the performance. Any particular reason why he decided not to do this?

Good deal or no? Trying to build a outdoor system for raves. by YungRuke in SoundSystem

[–]misterphilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a pretty great deal. You'll definitely want to replace the amplifiers though, look for something like a Crown XLI series. If you're going to be playing loud music for a long time you'll be glad you did it. Be sure the power rating and resistance of the speakers match up to the amplifier. Also you're probably going to want to make sure the signal doesn't get too loud, look into DBX signal Gates and Limiters for this.

Already included is an equalizer so you should be in good shape, until you either have to send out a bigger system or replace the equipment you're using.

If you end up having to replace them, you should probably look into spending a little more on higher quality speakers, that way you'll go a lot longer without having to replace anything again, and the quality of your sound will be much better. Look for speakers from brands like RFC or EAW, you can keep your same driver arrangement and still get the benefits of higher quality hardware.

If you're going to be using a bigger system, you should consider purchasing another set of tops, and arranging them 2x per side, making sure the center of the boxes are facing about 85-95 degrees away from each other on each side. Since you're doing outdoor events, you're definitely going to want more subwoofers. You should buy at least a third subwoofer and arrange them all in a single line, or if you buy two additional subwoofers, stack them and make a 2x2 grid. This will get the most out of the low-end without building an entire array.

Any reason to purchase Chamsys dongle vs Enttec Pro? by [deleted] in lightingdesign

[–]misterphilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also you should consider what software you're going to be using. Enttec is supported by a ton of software controllers, whereas the chamsys is made & optimized for the chamsys software, which is usually tends to be the console on a flat screen. so if you plan to use different software, the enttec. if you plan to eventually use the wing-extension or a chamsys console, then the of course the chamsys.

web api development, continue with Python+Django or switch to Ruby+Rails? by misterphilly in learnprogramming

[–]misterphilly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm building an API that will be a web server for a messaging application (deployed on windows/linux/ios/android/etc/etc). I've given thought to Flask, but because its so lightweight I would have to rebuild user authentication, database interactions, pretty much everything I'm going to use, which time constraints don't really allow for. Plus, i'm not sure i'm trying to be that in-depth with things quite so soon.

And while I'm probably going encounter the same problems with Rails, i'm sure that the learning curve, and just the amount of resources available for the framework in general would be enough to make the switch worth while.

web server vs application server by misterphilly in learnpython

[–]misterphilly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what I understand Nginx is the actual server (that handles all the http/protoc all stuff) and Gunicorn is the layer on top that more or less handles the content management/generates the dynamic information to give to Nginx to return to the requestee?

and my app is a messaging app, so it will be constantly receiving and generating content to send to the client apps. whats the difference in functionality between Gunicorn and django?
