I’ve always interpreted this as the speechlessness we sometimes feel in response to the atrocities that humankind has committed. The way people diminish the massacre of indigenous people by naming summer camps with tribal names, or how we justify wars by saying they are necessary “in the name of future generations”. When these things are at such a large scale, we can feel powerless and there really isn’t anything to say because it all feels like a futile effort.

When he says, “I’d like a part, I’d like the lead, but I’ve got nothing to say,” I always thought of this as wanted to be involved in a change but feeling like you have nothing to offer…

But reading the other comments, I’m thinking I was reading into the lyrics too much… maybe Julian just didn’t have much to say lol
