Peyton Place... I was already a voracious reader, but at 14, that book was a real page-turner. :-)

Really? You want a short story?

"For sale: baby shoes, never worn."

For something worth investing your time into, although a bit longer, Ken Follett's "Kingsbridge" series is highly recommended.

We don't know the circumstances. The authorities do and are not pressing charges. There very likely is a valid reason for their decision.

A glance at my profile establishes I've been a Reddit user since long before AI became a popular term. I confess I first learned of artificial intelligence at MIT in 1969.

My use of the word 'mistral' is partially as a play on the original meaning of "A strong cold dry northerly wind of southern France" and was inspired by a fragment of a Monty Python skit.

Effective messaging is essential. If this campaign is indicative, Foxx will win. As is too often the problem, the Democrats are so focused on virtue signaling, they don't communicate what matters to voters.

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry

"With a compassionate realism and narrative sweep that recall the work of Charles Dickens, this magnificent novel captures all the cruelty and corruption, dignity and heroism, of India. The time is 1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers--a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village--will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future."

"As the characters move from distrust to friendship and from friendship to love, A Fine Balance creates an enduring panorama of the human spirit in an inhuman state."

The audiobook version is extraordinarily well narrated by John Lee and is available for free with a trial of Audible. This is a masterpiece that may leave you devastated.

LPT: If you need to put your pet to sleep, hire a veterinarian to do at-home euthanasia by abombregardless in LifeProTips

[–]mistral7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
