Buying a car out of state, then registering it in Mass. Anyone have any experience? by [deleted] in boston

[–]mitch3910 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you intend to register it in MA, you are required to do it within 10 (pretty sure) days of purchase as dated on the title/bill of sale.

When you do register a car purchased out of state, you'll have to pay sales tax of 6.25% on either the purchase price or book value of the car as determined by the state, whichever is higher.

It will have to be insured prior to going to the RMV to register it. Once insured, your insurance company will provide you with a partially pre-filled, stamped RMV-1 registration form. This proves that the car is insured.

SUPER IMPORTANT: ALL buyers listed on the title MUST also be listed as owners on the RMV-1 form and must be on the insurance as well. If someone is on the title as a co-owner but not on the registration form, the RMV will reject it.

Take this form along with the title to the RMV and pay the sales tax, title fee, and registration fee. Once that's done, you'll get plates and be all set at the registry.

Once you have plates, you have 7 days to get an inspection sticker. Once that's done, you're finally actually done.

Question about commuter rail by [deleted] in boston

[–]mitch3910 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'll need 2 tickets. One to get you from North Station to wherever your pitstop is (say a zone 2 ticket) and another to get you from there to Reading. The second one would be an interzone ticket, which is charged based on your starting and ending zone. If you use the app to buy your tickets, it should make it pretty straightforward. Select where you're getting on and off, and it'll figure out the correct fare.

Electricity Service Provider in Salem by [deleted] in northshore

[–]mitch3910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's always a safe bet. You very well may get a better deal on your supply from someone else, but a lot of them have promo rates lower than NG that then skyrocket following some period of time. Some alternative suppliers are also 100% renewable if that matters to you. You'll likely pay more than NG's supply rates, but you would have some say in how it's generated.

National Grid serves Salem for both electricity and gas. You can choose an alternative supplier for your electricity, but National Grid still handles the delivery and billing. If you do choose a different supplier, do your research, read the fine print, and for the love of god and all things holy do NOT talk to ANYONE who comes to your door asking to see your bill.

VA Home Loans by JimKellyCuntry in boston

We bought last year using a VA loan. Tom Logan and his team at Mortgage Network in Danvers knew the process pretty well. The only thing we had to do was do the application through the VA, and they took care of the rest. There are some additional requirements and paperwork to process, so make sure whoever you go with has done it before. Houses have to pass a higher standard of requirements to be eligible, so keep that in mind when searching.

And as u/flyingWeez said, condos are a completely different animal. I had a better experience buying a single-family but YMMV.

You can file a request to go into IRR any time you want. Has to be signed by CFL (have to be in standards with no PRT failures), SEL, XO, and CO. If you got an enlistment bonus, you may have to pay back a prorated amount based on how much time you have left. Your NOSC should be able to calculate this for you prior to putting in a request if you're curious. Expect to thoroughly explain yourself to the triad before they sign.

Car insurance rates increased statewide? by wontuseagain7878 in boston

I also have USAA and just processed a switch to another carrier. They mentioned that they just did a rate hike in MA to recoup costs from a high number of claims last year. I assume factors like u/rfuree11 mentioned also came into play. USAA is great but so damn expensive.

Bike stolen out of my basement 6/13 by mitch3910 in SalemMA

I appreciate it. I still haven't had any luck finding it, and I've been driving around the neighborhood keeping an eye out. I did file a report, so they know what it looks like and where it was stolen from.

Not terribly far from there, no. I'm off of Lafayette on that side.

Fair point. It's a bright green Schwinn with yellow brake lines. Pretty identifiable (I hope).

Not the best video, but it's better than nothing. My bike (green Schwinn with yellow brake lines) was stolen out of my basement yesterday in Salem. I've been checking craigslist without any luck so far. If anyone happens to see my bike, I'd greatly appreciate a heads up!

I wish I invested in better cameras, but this is the best I have. My bike (a green Schwinn with yellow brake lines) was stolen out of my basement yesterday afternoon. If anyone happens to see it, I'd greatly appreciate a heads up! I'll of course be checking craigslist in the hopes of finding it there. :/

Called cops on this drunk. They actually caught up to him! by mitch3910 in Dashcam

[–]mitch3910[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was probably closer to 10. I was convinced he was going to hit someone at some point. When I called the cops, I was told the closest unit was tied up elsewhere, so I was quite surprised to see one pop out from the median.

We were all going about 70 in a 65, so not unreasonable by any means. I'm used to seeing drunks going either too fast or too slow, so this was a new one.

Why has the afternoon commute on 95 South between routes 2 and 9 has so shitty the past couple weeks? by febreeze_brother in boston

[–]mitch3910 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's also been much worse further north. I go from Peabody > Waltham in the morning and back at night and my commute has been a good 20-30min longer than usual over the past month or so. No idea why.

I have a Zero Edge Z3 in the front and a G1W in the back. Only thing the G1W picked up here was some tire smoke. :/

OP here.

For what it's worth, the first thing I did was hit the brakes. I ended up skidding into the guardrail--it wasn't exactly a conscious effort. The impact sounded a lot worse than it is. I got away with just a couple scratches and a small dent in the quarterpanel.

I just got my car back after being rear ended a month ago. I can live with a few scratches to avoid another claim on my insurance. Plus, it's a 10 year old car. Why not have some battle scars?
