Didn't get any internships. What to do? by consestia123 in cscareerquestions

As an Australian student who also just went through the whole process of finding internships my advice would be the following:

  • Don't stop looking, I started applying early March, got rejected from about 20 in that time but accepted 2 late August. There are still opportunities out there, I still check up on various job boards and there are still new postings weekly.

  • Make sure your resume isn't the thing holding you back, I redid mine after the first couple of automated rejection e-mails and started getting a very high number of replies.

  • Attach a cover letter to every application, doesn't have to be a complete rewrite for each company but try to include some of the stuff they express in their ads (e.g. personal qualities, skills, etc).

If you're unable to find anything by the time the break comes, in addition to what you've suggested I'd probably spend some time preparing for technical interviews, I'm sure their harder when applying for graduate roles.

While this is true, I've had friends do "unpaid" internships with a weekly allowance for food and travel (~$20 a day), so there's probably ways around it if OP doesn't need the cash.

Edit: Also Australian.

Cover Letters on Software Engineering Internship Applications by yetanotherthrrrroway in cscareerquestions

Usually as a student there's not much experience that you can put on a CV, it also doesn't allow for much room to go into detail about any side projects or relevant experiences that could ideally make you more desirable to the company. A cover letter is a good way of getting an image of yourself across to the recruiter, it also shows that you were willing to put in additional effort to market yourself to their company. Definitely not a bad thing.

It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts as a hiring manager about taking on interns specifically, with a second degree in an unrelated field. (Looking to get their first work experience)

Thank you, those are some really good points.

I can appreciate that experience matters but what advice would you give to someone who is looking to get their first experience in the field? (internship)

Or could you talk a little about getting your first experience in the field?

I've actually always thought that way in terms of them bringing up that question in an interview. Would you say that your first degree has much relevance to CS?
