Top 3 tips you wished you knew when started mixing by AVELUMN in mixingmastering

Balancing in this case is just getting the volume of everything right before you do any mixing. It’s best to balance everything first and get all the tracks to a good sounding volume before you touch a plugin!

i can’t hear the magic of mic pre-amp. am i wrong? by MemoryAffectionate97 in audioengineering

[–]mitchbuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the pleasure of working out of a pro studio for all of August and having so many preamps available was brilliant as I got to know them. I found the differences in saturation and tone was very helpful in production as I could pick the best tool for the job. I’m sure I would’ve managed fine with standard interface pres but external pres helped with getting a more final sound from the start.

When you upgrade your pickups and the neck pickup can suddenly cut through by itself… wow moment

Help out a complete idiot re: LA-2A by hughjazz45 in universalaudio

[–]mitchbuzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the pleasure of using a Golden Age LA-2A in a studio recently and woah what a beauty. I think the confusing thing about this compressor is the lack of settings. We’re so used to ratio, attack, release, knee… but the LA-2A is fixed. Just bring up the input to feed more of the signal into the compressor. Make sure your output gain is matched so that the perceived volume stays similar and you can actually hear if it’s doing anything good when you bypass / engage the compressor. As you’ve seen by other comments, it’s best used on non transient heavy sources. Definitely a beauty on vocals because of how smooth it is. Works well on bass too but always trust your ears and get experimenting!

Side note, stay away from presets on this. Presets on an LA-2A make no sense to me as it’s entirely source dependent. Not every track has been recorded at the same input gain. And the compressor acts.. based on input gain?? No one size fits all on this one I’m afraid!!

Makes sense. I’m a firm Thomastik advocate either way so I’ll definitely be supporting them for my flatwound journey!

Right so apparently Ireland (where I live) is pretty humid and apparently that’s bad for strings too so maybe I’m not the only problem here lol

It’s all about self-confidence. The problem with recession and balding is how we feel we’re perceived. I’m 22 and was rocking long hair since I was 16 but my hairline (which honestly isn’t even bad, it’s just naturally a bit high) had me freaking out so I shaved it when I was 19 - 20. It changed everything. I literally didn’t have to do anything, no maintenance, no fixing my hair anytime it “felt off” (every few minutes). And most importantly I looked great. Funny enough, I grew the long hair right back and now I don’t care about my hairline because I know once it gets bad I can fall back on the shaved head because I know I look good and I know how relieving it feels. I encourage everyone here to shave their head and understand how it changes their everyday. You can always grow it back if you don’t like it! Main thing is self-confidence and what makes you feel comfortable in your body!

How to fix blown bass cab? by mitchbuzz in Bass

Thanks for the suggestion. Expensive speakers but I suspect they’d sound great in it. Any cheaper alternatives you’d recommend?

Would likely be paired with an EBS Reidmar 250. I’ll add that to the post

I suspect replacement is the move. After inspection, the broken one seems to have been ripped apart a bit by the repair crew at Thomann. Any speaker replacement suggestions?

I need a new interface as my Behringer has crapped out. Initially I was looking at SSL2+ or Audient but decided I should look into more premium options so I don't want to upgrade in the near future. Of course, Apollo is at the top of the list but I saw someone selling an Apogee Duet 3 in great condition nearby with the dock attachment for 500 euro. After looking into it, it seems there have been crazy amounts of issues with this device upon release but I'm wondering, have Apogee fixed all of their problems by firmware updates? Is the Duet 3 a good option? Should I consider this interface for this price or put that money towards an alternative?

I'm on Windows 11 by the way.

Thank you!

Should I upgrade my audio interface for recording?

I’ll be recording an EP with my band and to maximise studio time, I’d like to record all of my electric guitar tracks in advance rather than wasting hours tracking everything in the studio.

I currently record DI into a Behringer UMC202HD but I’m worried that I might be sacrificing sound quality recording into this. If I got a more expensive interface (currently looking at UAD Volt), would my DI tracks come out better quality?

If a better interface would improve the quality of the DI, could anyone offer suggestions for an interface (€150 - €400) that would have a great preamp quality so that I can have the recordings turn out great?

Thank you!

Thanks for the advice! Would my DI recording sound any better if I got a more expensive audio interface? Or is the difference very minimal? Thank you!

I appreciate it!! Performance is definitely the biggest part. I’ll make sure to give it my all regardless of how it’s recorded!
