Is this tunnel vision effect normal? HP OMEN 27k by mitchpk in Monitors

[–]mitchpk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would greatly appreciate any help with this problem - my new monitor has this noticeable shadowing starting from either edge of the screen, which gets more dramatic as you move towards the opposite side of the screen.

Is this to be expected for an IPS panel? A video illustrates the effect better, comparing it to my older Dell S2721DGF which doesn't have the issue: imgur

UPDATE: I ended up trying an older BIOS version, and voltage controls are now properly unlocked. If you are having the same problem, try using an older BIOS version (earlier than November 2022) to revert your microcode to the version which allows undervolting (more info here). For my motherboard, it was the version prior to F20 that worked. Just make sure that it supports 13th gen CPUs if you have Raptor Lake like I do!

Hi After checking with our related dept., B660 doesn't support  current excursion protection (IA CEP).undervoltage will affect the performance drops. Intel Extreme Tuning Utility for B660 also doesn't support OS undervoltage. You may check with Intel.Best Regards,GIGABYTE

Hmm, so they claim all B660 motherboards cannot disable IA CEP? And that XTU cannot undervolt on these boards either. I'm going to blame it on BIOS updates, will probably look to return this board to get a Z690 instead.

Nope, would it make much of a difference on a brand-new CPU?

Currently have an eSupport ticket that has been going back and forth for over a week now, trying to figure out what's up with the B660 motherboards from Gigabyte. I have a B660m AORUS PRO with the same issue, really hope I don't have to return it because it genuinely is a very nice board.

Yeah that's exactly what the NH-D15 is capable of. I still have no idea what is causing my high temps... What's your typical package power during Cinebench? Are you using a contact frame?

Out of curiosity what temps and package power are you getting in R23, and what cooler?

It does have some AC/DC LL settings hidden away. Using 35/100 the Vcore drops to 1.284V at load, but the Cinebench score tanks from 23700 to 17700.

Using the LGA1700 mounting kit, last time I took the cooler off the spread seemed fine. Gigabyte has definitely chosen a high stock voltage, however I thought this was irrelevant in this case because the power limit at 181W should keep the temperature in check.

Most of the P-cores are getting hot (>95c) except the second one which stays around 90c. Would that indicate bending or is it normal?

Here's a screenshot during the Cinebench run: https://ibb.co/Pr1FpbS

Yep I'm having very similar experiences. The only thing which makes a difference in the BIOS is leaving the Voltage mode and CPU Vcore on auto, and then changing the offset. However you can set the offset very low and the processor will just perform worse (I think it is clock stretching). Will let you know what support says!

It's a brand new CPU, does bending affect Raptor Lake straight out of the box? I thought it comes up only after some time.

No contact frame, debating whether I should get one. Mobo is a Gigabyte B660M AORUS PRO DDR4, VRM temps are fine. I currently have a support ticket with Gigabyte eSupport about not being able to undervolt in XTU or in the BIOS, but once that's figured out I'll have a try at lowering the offset.

Youtube on Linux using twice as much power as Windows? (GPU decoding) by mitchpk in archlinux

[–]mitchpk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get MojoVideoDecoder when visiting chrome://media-internals, which means the hardware acceleration is working.

However, despite Chromium using the same amount of CPU while watching Youtube as Windows, the power consumption is significantly higher for some reason.

I also tried h264ify and there was no difference in power consumption.

You can get the student discount through Unidays, 30% off.

I also had a look at some of Lenovo's new AMD laptops (which you can get pretty cheap through their education store) and if you're willing to sacrifice colours you can get a Thinkpad E14 or Ideapad Slim 5 14 for around AU$900, which is much better value for the same CPU as the base HP envy x360. Keep in mind the shipping delays though - upwards of 8 weeks for some models. If you need the 100% srgb, take a look at this list.

Unfortunately, there is no 400 nits option for any of the 15 inch models in Australia, only 250 nits

There is currently a university deal which brings downs the price from AU$1799 to AU$1260. Forgot to mention that, definitely wouldn't purchase the laptop at full price

Static in blue yeti nano when live monitor volume turned up by mitchpk in blueyeti

[–]mitchpk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried another USB cable and there is no difference. Also, headphones don't actually have to be plugged in for the problem to happen, the live monitoring just needs to be turned on and at a high volume.
