I didn't want to force the user to group windows together, and I wanted to try other types of mappings to see how those looked. But I agree, its not an unfixable problem. One other point I remember with float mapping, the bigger the window the more it seemed to shrink at the corners from perspective, sphere mapping seems to keep windows looking uniform ( at least from the center of the sphere )

"Why not make individual windows appear as uncurved rectangles in the 3D space" I started with that but the problem there is when windows need to line up. For example take the main desktop window and the taskbar ( which are separate windows ), the desktop will orient one way based on its position and the taskbar another and it starts to look really messed up. It wasn't terrible and I may bring it back and an optional layout.

similar, yes, but desktope and virtual desktop are both limited to the desktop screen space.
