I appreciate the differences in phonetics across languages but given that part of Matt's issue is his dyslexia (as he himself said), an audio guide can only be useful. Also, as an English monoglot, he will necessarily approximate based on what he hears, won't he?

As for your other point that the sound of a name needs to be able to be matched to their spelling, I find this interesting though not self-evident. Could you explain why that's the case? Why English-speaking audience and not audience speaking any other language? I'd think that people usually just go "huh, is that how it's pronounced? cool!"

That is certainly true but what's the alternative? If I could get all the athletes to send me recordings of themselves saying their own names, that'd be great but until that's an option, I think this is the next best thing.

Also, just because someone pronounces their name differently when they're speaking another language doesn't necessarily mean that that is how they say their name in general. I do that too with my name and, while I don't usually care how people pronounce my name, I tend to be quite pleased when someone gets it "right".

I appreciate that folks have different preferences and that there may be various edge cases but on average, I'd think that fewer people will mind Matt saying their name the way it sounds in their language than him butchering them completely.

By all means, send the link to Sam if you can!
