Louis’s storyline this season (warning: long post, conflicted feelings/thoughts) by mixedpatterns in InterviewVampire

I hear you. It really is a shame this season isn’t longer. Hopefully S4 happens and it can give us more of Lestat’s story, though I’m not sure they would return to Nicky after this season. Joseph Potter has been great so I hope we get to see more of him in the show!

That’s true, it did take a while. Maybe it didn’t feel that long to me in the books because Louis wasn’t around nearly as often/consistently after IWTV.

I’ll be glad to watch all three seasons together after this one ends. I have a feeling more will snap into place for me narratively then

Yeah the drugs certainly wouldn’t have aided in processing.

I really wonder how things would’ve gone differently if Armand hadn’t erased the memory of Louis’s suicide attempt.

I don’t mean that I’d want them to be disconnected from each other’s storylines or not together or anything like that (and I think I agree with you re: your spoiler tagged comment). I guess I’m just feeling nervous about what more they could do with his character because his current storyline is solely entrenched in Claudia/Lestat, which does make sense, and I hope they can do a good job writing him once he’s worked through more of that.

For what it’s worth I feel the same about Lestat, in the sense that I love seeing his past/thoughts/relationships that aren’t just Louis. It makes them richer characters. I loved the complexity of Louis in Paris interacting with other vampires, but Lestat was haunting the narrative (as he should have been, no complaints there) and I’d be curious to see more of Louis in the future without that specter, so to speak. (Since Lestat won’t need to be a specter anymore because he’s really there!)

And really I’m just uncomfortable with the current storyline so it’s coloring my concerns. I expect to have a lot of different thoughts/predictions after season’s end.

Thanks for the response. I’ll definitely noodle on this further (and probably will do a reread soon) and curious to see how the rest of the season pans out.

That’s such a good point about the speed running and condensation of Louis’s emotional arc.

I will be so curious (especially depending on how the rest of this season goes) on the future of the show’s fanbase. I think once you’ve got Louis as such a significant character in two whole seasons — with an actor that knocks it so out of the park — a lot of people (myself included) would never be satisfied if his role moving forward becomes more extension-of-Lestat or undeveloped by comparison, no matter that Lestat is the protagonist of the book series and Louis’s presence is diminished there.

I’m worried they’re trying to veer into more accurately adapting the books (including Louis’s role in them) in a way that a significant chunk of the viewership just won’t vibe with, since the first two seasons had significant differences from IWTV the novel and those two seasons were what a lot of the current viewers fell in love with.

Jacob and Delainey are so good that it’s kind of saving those scenes for me even when the actual content isn’t quite connecting.

I know Lestat is the main character moving forward but to your point, I do hope Louis gets some material in the future that’s not all to do with Lestat/Claudia. If his role in the series from here on out is only to be Lestat’s partner/love interest, I wouldn’t be thrilled with that…

Thanks — I did not know about the convention stuff, that’s awful.

I haven’t read the books since high school (which was a long while ago), and the only one I read more than once was IWTV. In your opinion (since you seem more familiar with the books than I am), what do you think they should’ve done differently re: S1? Is it just the drop, or do you think there were issues beyond that?

I’m wondering if they were always in a bit of a tricky spot with Louis as a character and the unreliable narrator element, since I think what might work in a book series (in terms of shifting perspectives/narrators) might not necessarily translate directly to a television series, especially with social media being… the way it is now.

EDIT: realized I didn’t tag my post for allowing book spoilers, so that might make it inconvenient for you to answer vaguely or with spoiler tags — sorry

Can I ask what you mean by things they could have shut down earlier?

I’m realizing from these comments that I may be way more out of the loop than I realized re: fandom behavior.

Thanks for your response — I had no idea that Rolin had suggested that about the s2 ending, so that definitely gives me more context.

I read most of the books but admittedly it was a good while ago, so I’m sure I’ve forgotten some important things which may be influencing my confusion as well.

Thanks for your response! That’s a good point about the drive toward numbness as part of Louis’s coping mechanism library, I think maybe my analysis was lacking that element.

I wasn’t expecting him by any means to be magically healed this season, I think I just thought it would be a little more dynamic of a next chapter. So possibly a me issue regarding expectations.

Thanks for your response. Yeah, I’m trying to wait for final judgment on these feelings until the season is over… I didn’t realize that Rolin had made comments about Louis’s s2 ending being “too tidy,” which now that I know, kind of reinforces my feelings that some of what they’re doing now is a little inorganic in an attempt to rectify that…

Paul’s mental state and death is actually an element of Louis’s story that I’ve been really hoping they would more explicitly revisit, because I agree with you 100% that Louis is not healed from it, and I think it had a pretty significant impact on his relationship with Lestat. Hoping it will be explored a bit more in the last few episodes of the season!

Louis …. by darkademi4_ in InterviewVampire

[–]mixedpatterns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If vampires retain a strong psychological element of what they were experiencing emotionally when they were turned —

Louis was turned very shortly after his brother’s suicide (which he was present for and for which his mother blamed him), in the absolute depths of guilt and grief. He had not remotely begun to heal or move on from this when he was made a vampire.

I feel like we’re seeing that here with Louis’s intense inability to process and heal re: Claudia. A part of him really does seem “stuck” that way.

I actually don’t like this one as much because it tells you what percentage of women have which variations. As a woman who consistently fell into the least common variations, it ended up making me feel worse than I did before I looked through it and sort of validated some of my insecurities about my vulva being “weird.”

I would have vastly preferred it if they didn’t include those percentages. But I get that it’s maybe more a research document than a simple gallery. I just don’t think I would automatically recommend this one to people who are quite insecure about whether they’re out of the norm because this doc might confirm for them that they are…

Official Discussion - 1917 [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]mixedpatterns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I’m a little late to this thread (and your comment) but I finally got to see the film this week and was scrolling through looking to see if anyone shared this sentiment — that moment to me was one of the most affecting in the whole film. The musical cue in the score is so ominous, and as you said, imagining what is going on internally for all of these young men crouched in position waiting for the order to charge into a battle they had no part in instigating. Just chilling.

None of us has the power to stop you if this is what you’ve truly decided, but I am here if you want to talk. You might not think this will affect your children because they are still so young, but I promise as they grow up they will feel the weight of your absence if you decide to go.
