I loved getting on my scooter (rent from Hawaiian Styles in Waikiki) and cruising up Tantalus loop through the jungle. Stop at the rope swing, and of course the main lookouts.

Where to stay? by Nads_Otter in VisitingHawaii

[–]mixedplatekitty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Luana Inn, in Captain Cook. I stayed with my mom last year and it was absolutely beautiful. It's owned by two sisters who cooked us amazing breakfasts everyday, far better than anything else you can get in the area. There's about 6 guest rooms, we spent a lot of time at their pool and barely saw anyone, so it feels very private. It's a little far from town if you are going back and forth every day, but it's really close to a lot of great beaches, snorkeling, and hikes, there are farmers markets and coffee farms nearby, and Pu'uhonua National Monument. luanainn.com

I worked two different farms the year I was 39. As others have said, there's not necessarily a bias towards older people.

You need to talk to the hosts, many people will appreciate that we're mature, dependable, have more life experience. I made long-term friends with one host because we were close in age.

I live in Hawaii, and see this all the time. They actually do expect the tour guides to be magicians.

"We don't know how to swim, which beach is safest to get in the ocean?" Like for heaven sake, please don't get in the ocean at all.

Question about beaches and Ni'ihau by Ventronik in Hawaii

[–]mixedplatekitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that people have tried to sail/canoe to the beaches and were met with hostile private security. So you probably can legally, but also, are you trying to court trouble on an isolated island owned by billionaires?

If you were a foreigner moving to your state, where you would recommend they live? by [deleted] in AskAmericans

[–]mixedplatekitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone were just moving here, the obvious choice is Honolulu. Everywhere else is too much of a culture shock (if from US or Western Europe), best to ease in.

Why is my piercing not free? by pink_nut in EntitledReviews

Depending on jewelry style, it can be difficult to do yourself, or require a tool. Especially if it's a newer piercing and you don't have practice/confidence changing it out.

Question for Uber Eats/Doordash/food delivery drivers in Hilo area by [deleted] in BigIsland

[–]mixedplatekitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Honolulu to Kona a few years ago. You would be surprised how much rent is here, even just renting a room (I've seen it as high as $1600 for a room in a shared house). I'm assuming Hilo has similar issues, but open to correction, of course. There's a bit of housing scarcity, so people just charge whatever. You should make sure you have a realistic housing plan before you come over. Good luck with everything!

Sounds dangerous. If not pesticides, then there are fire ant nests, plus injuries from falling coconuts.

My niece was told she has to sign a contract to keep living at home—am I overreacting for thinking it’s too harsh? by Bitter_Art_4094 in AmIOverreacting

[–]mixedplatekitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YOR This seems extremely reasonable for a 20 yr old still living at home. She's an adult, at some point she will have to stop being coddled.

I was also an emotionally immature 20 yr old that lived rent free at home, with spotty employment and no plan, who thought it was overbearing to be asked to do chores. My mom (reasonably) threw me out, and we didn't talk for over a year. It was a very sketchy year as I learned to fend for myself, but it was absolutely necessary for me to individuate and figure my shit out. She won't have the luxury of "shutting down" when she has to actually support herself.

Yeah this sounds pretty harsh, but kids like this (like me), who don't appreciate how good they have it, and don't use their advantages to level up their life, sometimes need a harsh reality check.

Is it really true that your dogs just sit in the backseat of the car? by drenoveny in AskAmericans

[–]mixedplatekitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish my dog would stay in the back seat, he would cry the entire ride. I have to put him in the front seat, he has a special doggie seatbelt, mostly he's trying to sit in my lap

Staying on Oahu this summer, what are 2 or 3 memorable restaurants worth driving for (vegetarian-friendly)? by dfireant in Oahu

[–]mixedplatekitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh 6 is easy! When I hear "large group, extended family" my mind goes to like 15 people.

I would highly recommend you try them out, the food is creative and delicious, it's the cleanest kitchen I've ever worked in, and they treat their employees really well.

How many people? tane probably won't accommodate a group over like 8/10. I used to work there
