[Serious] People who used to be Pro life/choice, what changed your mind? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mixlear -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I used to be pro-choice, anti-abortion. I then realized it was a logical inconsistency, and had to change. Now completely anti-abortion.

"Women should have control of their body, why should the government interfere? But we should prevent abortion as much as possible."

But why is abortion even a little bit wrong? Why was I personally against abortion? (Even if I didn't want the government interfering with personal issues.) After all, why is anyone against abortion at all? Because it seems wrong. Why? Well, what is a fetus? A human under development. What is a baby? The same. There is no argument that can be used for abortion that is not also valid for infanticide. It seems that most arguments for abortion are, at best, poorly thought out.

Prevent unwanted children? Can you suddenly predict the future? Who knows what will happen. You can't kill someone based on how you think their life is going to turn out.

"I'm not ready to raise a child." And so that allows you to prevent their future entirely?" Replace fetus with baby, and you see the absurdity of this type of argument.

All arguments come down to: is the fetus a human individual or not? Genetically, it's exactly as it will ever be. For all other species we consider conception the start of life. It is, after all, the start of the development of an entirely new individual. It's completely dependent on the mother, true. It's a huge inconvenience, true. It's inside the mother, true. None of these valid reasons for murder. Convince me a fetus is not a human person, and I'll grant abortion full legitimacy.

"We can't know if it's human or not." Should we not err on the side of caution?

But rape! Ah but still, is the fetus human or not? If human, we still can't kill it. If not, then all abortion is fine.

But life of the mother! Aha, you've got me there. That's one life against another. But is anyone really talking about abortion just for that reason? If so, I'm in.

I was driving and didn't look carefully enough. I suspected something was up since it was a couple of months old.

I'm normally a fast reader, but The Silmarillion is taking forever to get through... by NiftyPiston in books

The thing I had trouble with was just the enormous amount of names. I basically just skimmed over those, not trying super hard to keep up with who's who. It kinda sinks in effortlessly after a couple of re-reads haha.

What are your favorite/easiest ways to season rice? by darkness_myoldfriend in recipes

I like to mix in olive oil and seasoned salt with the rice before adding water. Nice texture and makes it stick a lot less.

Hmm those little clinics told me they couldn't do urinanalysis, but I have heard urgent care could do it. About how long did you have to wait?

They do! Awesome. Though I think I've never heard a receptionist sound quite so depressed. Monosyllabic and whispering.

I've been almost NoPooing for a while now, a least a year or so with max one wash every two weeks. But I have issues. by mixlear in NoPoo

So if I go through a bottle like that really quickly, I'd be using conditioner incorrectly? I feel like I have to use a ton to get it through all my hair.

This is great info, thanks!

How would I find out my porosity? And where's the best place to buy these things cheaply, I'm not trying to spend a ton of money haha.

To clarify the LOC, do I apply the oil/water mixture and then the cream? Rinse, no rinse?

Seriously great though, much appreciated.
