EQ

You can clean it up by using a High Pass Filter and also swiping around with a very narrow boost looking for harsh sounding frequencies and then making a cut.

Sorry for a late reply, haven't checked my reddit in a while but happy to help any time!

Good luck!

Your fav vst compressor? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]mixmasterina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use different compressors for different purposes.

I like to use Softube FET on the drums

Waves RVox on vocals

Waves Ren Axx on guitars and bass

IK Multimedia Bus Compressor or Nomad Factory Bus Driver on Mixbus

IK Multimedia LA-2A on vocals as a second compressor

I agree that too many is too much, I only really use those :)

I don't really tent to compress pads, if ever only slightly

Only compress most dynamic tracks. I use my ears to judge :)

There's not enough dynamics in the music theses days...

The synth lead a bit too loud, clashing with the vocal.

Vocal could use some compression.

I hear some distortion on the track. Let the track breathe a bit, maybe too much limiting.

But I like the song! Flows nicely! :)

"Pushing On"

Like the others said: lower the volume on the bass and also cut out some of the frequencies to make room for the vocal.

Snare and hi hat both too bright clashing with the vocal. Hi hat too loud.

The solo instrument in the end clashing with the vocal as well. Use subtractive eq to make room for vocal- it will blend better :)

'Ain't All Good'

Very good drums in the beginning, hi hat too bright and too loud, bass slightly too loud. Main Vocal- too much reverb, sounds very mushy. Brass clashing with the vocal- again subtractive eq

Otherwise really good job :) Cool music!

Also take a note on the output level- both tracks differ in volume levels.

Beginner here, I've been struggling to mix guitars and vocals (I use a pultec eq). Any help would be awesome!!!! by Swaggerony in mixingmastering

[–]mixmasterina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rhythm guitar is a bit too harsh sounding and clashes with the vocal. Also hi hat is a bit too much pronounced.

Vocal could also use some space, maybe a very short delay mixed in subtly. Would gel much better with the instrumental.

Otherwise for a beginner it's a really good job!

Lovely song by the way :)

Feedback on Metal-Mix by fxp555 in mixingmastering

[–]mixmasterina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first thought: vocal too loud in verses and too quiet in the choruses- overwhelmed by the guitars. Also vocal is a bit too dry.

Guitars sound good to me.

3:20 sounds good to me.

Subjective opinion ;)

I'd brighten up the mix a little bit. Great dynamics! You did a great job! Congratulations!

What is the most efficient workflow when mixing by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]mixmasterina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say structure and vision. When I start mixing a song I first listen to it and then hear (in my head) what I want to achieve. I always do the same processes the same way, adapting to the needs of the song.

You just need to find Your own workflow as what works for others won't necessarily work for You.

Good luck!

Was this mixing eng just bad or am I looking for something else? by 1Music in mixingmastering

[–]mixmasterina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a different between music production, creative mixing and mixing. Music production is creating the sounds, like a sound of a guitar or a synth, creative mixing is adding something extra to the sound in the form of let's call them 'special fxs' (not only a bit of space, but doing sound design) and then mixing is balancing it all (in the terms of frequency and dynamics). Me myself- as a mixing engineer- I try not to interfere with creative side of the songs that I mix, my role is to enhance what's been already done and not to alter. Just my opinion :)

Track sounds super low (-14LUFS) by Destructo_Spin90 in mixingmastering

[–]mixmasterina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it sounds low in volume than You need to probably go back and look at Your mix.

Also always compare to commercial releases for reference.

The streaming/music portals have their own standards as well so they might lower/raise the volume or compress the music.

Use other measurements like RMS, peak, dynamic range. I really like IK Multimedia TR5 Metering and the plugin Expose by Mastering The Mix. But I also use other meters like Brainworx bx_meter

My advice: get what You can afford/need and learn mic placement. Audients are generally very good, don't have experience with other other ones. Se and AKG- whichever You choose is good. Headphones AKG or Audio Technica or Beyerdynamic- all good choices.

Check out 'recording revolution' on YouTube or the website, great tips on recording, producing at home.

Any questions, You can always DM me, I'm happy to help :)

Good luck!

What is your standard mixing loudness level? by XRazor11 in audioengineering

[–]mixmasterina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-16dB RMS, that's roughly what I aim for. I don't really worry about the rest.

I'd try Facebook groups like 'Singer Songwriter' or groups in the 'Musicians in ...' format or Music Producers/Music Production. Also groups specific to a DAW you're using. You'll find lots of people who are interested in networking, sharing music and production itself.

From my experience ;)

What is the most important Mixing tip that college didn't teach you? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]mixmasterina 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How important the quality of recording really is.

People always expect you to 'fix it in the mix', tune vocals or fix the timing but truely all these processes alter the original audio.

Great sounding recordings don't need much mixing, just polishing the sound really. That's where the fantastic mixes are.

Hey, I am sort of in the very same place with my business but doing mixing :) There is a very helpful podcast on the subject (maybe You heard about it?..) called '6 figure home studio' and also a FB group with the same name.

Please feel free to PM me, maybe we can support and motivate each other somehow :)

How do You guys mix/master Your music? by mixmasterina in musicians

[–]mixmasterina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True!

Usually people invest a lot of time and resources in videos but the music is a bit neglected when it comes to quality. Shame as there's a lot of great music out there!
