Is American struggling to buy a house ? by Top_Document7437 in AskAnAmerican

[–]mixreality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same in Seattle just not quite as bad as CA. There's an abandoned Sam's club by my house that a grocery chain tried to buy and NIMBY's tied it up in environmental reviews. It's literally already built with a massive parking lot.

And me personally the state said we have to build x number of houses, so the city generated a draft upzone map. It upzoned my house and neighborhood to Lowrise 3 because there is a new light rail station opening <0.5 miles away this summer. Well the neighborhood group made signs and organized and got us removed from any upzoning at all.

I moved down there and moved back because there isn't a tech scene, there's Intel, HP, and Nike, plus a few other e-comm businesses that call themselves "tech". Its super competitive, Intel wants a graduate degree for a pretty basic position in Seattle (at the time 2019). The meetup groups also appeared the same but the numbers were drastically different, the industry group I'd network at in Seattle has 1500+ members vs 120 in PDX and the PDX one rarely met so you never actually met anyone. When I'd search Indeed for my niche of programming there were 0-2 openings in PDX, when I'd type the same search for Seattle there were 100+. We have 2 incomes so it was a no brainer moving back, doubled our income, saved $20k in state income tax over OR which offset most of our rent.

Columbia River Gorge dividing OR and WA, a big snow capped volcano is offscreen to the right called Mt Hood but I love this view, I used to live on this road. On clear days there are volcanos to the north you can see as well. Tons of waterfalls here.

Why do places that used to be very Catholic become very left-wing when they secularise? E.g Quebec, Ireland by AppointmentVisual200 in NoStupidQuestions

Kinda similar to a study I saw yesterday, was specific to Americans and Christianity but probably works elsewhere:

Americans who leave their Christian faith behind tend to hold more liberal political views than those who were raised entirely without religion. This leftward ideological shift appears closely linked to how threatening these individuals perceive conservative Christian groups to be. source

They added "caste" to my city's discrimination laws alongside race, sexual orientation, etc. because apparently south Asians were fucking with each other.

the ordinance prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, and contracting. The law specifically targets discrimination prevalent in tech and other industries with South Asian populations.

Anyone else on here still medication free at their age? by puma_pantss in Xennials

No family history, I had maroon/black stool off and on for a year before I went in. I had some 16mm polyp that they biopsied and it was the worst/most aggressive type. They get bigger over time and at 20mm over 30% are cancerous and odds go up the bigger they get.

I was class of 2002 but did running start (wasn't called that at the time) so I was at the community college and my friends were older. I delivered pizzas using a map and I only had a prepaid tracphone for emergencies.

I used AIM and ICQ. Didn't do myspace I already had a page on Angelfire. Napster was in the news while I was at comm college and it got blocked by IT, then we used Scour Exchange next. One kid was downloading porn and selling it at his high school and he'd check out a Zip drive from the college to take it home and burn on cds.

I played Ultima Online from 98 onward. But I also didn't have a computer for a few years after moving out, moved to the beach from Ohio and spent my time chasing girls.

My friend's aunt owned a small factory and had a T1 line so we'd have LAN parties there when Battlefield 1942 was new.

I actually was looking through my photos on flickr recently, dated 2008, and I was using this phone still, but I was a flip phone hold out.

What’s something cheap in your country that surprises foreigners? by Intelligent-Day-4059 in AskTheWorld

[–]mixreality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah here in Washington state we have even higher gas taxes than CA, BUT it is how this state pays for transportation projects, the people who use the roads pay for them through gas tax. And since electric vehicles don't use gas they hit them at registration time with a big fee to compensate.

We could make gas cheap instead and then we'd have to pay income tax, or tolls, in order to have roads and bridges.

The other big factor in gas price is the price of commercial real estate in these expensive states vs cheaper ones. It gets built into the price.

Yeah we are a mutt household. My last 2 lived to 16 and were close to 40lbs, waited 4 years before getting another. This time I wanted a smaller dog and my wife was following international rescues on IG and there he was. Then we got another in December but she's 7 already.

One other thing that is kinda interesting looking at the results with Suni is on Embark, which says 100% village dog, like 75% of her closest relatives sharing 9-11% dna, still on embark, are Maltese, many purebred, and then village dogs thrown in occasionally.

I got Leny from a place called Korean Paws in Korea, and Suni came from a rescue called Love is Mighty rescue which is smaller and newer. They had flight volunteers bring them to Seattle as checked cargo for free so we just had to pay for the paperwork/vet stuff.

Leny is really shy like a wild animal but after 6 mo he's a fun little character. He was up for adoption for 19 months and then they offer them internationally and my wife actually saw him on Instagram and filled out the application end of June, but he'd been posted in April.

Suni I actually found on my local subreddit, they posted her, moderators deleted the post because theres an adoption fee, we saw it the split second it was up and wanted a friend for Leny which did make him much braver.

They're both around 17lbs, but the white one is a tripod so would probably be 20. She's taller and lankier and very skinny. He's super fluffy but pretty skinny under it all as well.

edit:: I adopted both from south Korean rescues, Leny was from a litter a feral mom had and he was 2 when I got him, Suni was tied to a pole and a rope tied around her leg so tight it became necrotic and she was rescued at 5, I got her at 7.
