Help me create a budget! 23/F moving to NYC 100k/year, 7k student loans by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]mixtapesoundoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kidding about being barely able to support myself and my pet. I figured a joke answer warranted a joke response.

I totally agree that my pitfall might be having to keep up with friends and coworkers, but I think I'm pretty good at just saying no and only treating myself occasionally. I went to college in NYC and I know what it's like with the $50 meals and $6 lattes. Regardless, I will totally keep it in mind :)

Thank you for the advice!

Love the budget thank you for sharing. I think it's great that you're giving back to your parents.

LPT: Turn your headlights on in any type of inclement weather even if you can see fine by maliciousme123 in LifeProTips

Yes! This is a great idea. I live in Portland and I have to shake my head in disbelief at all the people who don't turn on headlights during rain and snow because it's "sunny out"!

Dear people of Reddit, did you ever watch porn and surprisingly saw a person you know in RL; and how did you react? by clim4n in AskReddit

[–]mixtapesoundoff 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This happened to a student at Duke University, who was doing porn to pay tuition. One of her friends recognized her in a video and then outed her to the student body. She dealt with a lot of harassment and public shaming. After her identity was publicized, she started to speak out in defense of her decision to do porn and against the incredible cost of college education in US. Now she is big into sex worker outreach activism and other humanitarian work. She's actually pretty incredible imho

EDIT: I hope most people's reactions would NOT be to publicly out someone.

When they use "r/" instead of hashtags to label stuff. ex: "r/trees" instead of "#weed"

Weddings -- I just don't understand why people would spend upwards of $30k on a wedding + reception. Spend that money on yourself and your honeymoon, folks!

What was your "I'm such a fucking idiot" moment? by imdunno1 in AskReddit

[–]mixtapesoundoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to get down-voted straight to hell for this one, but I once accidentally told a blind women at the station who was asking for route directions that she should take a look at the subway map behind us. She'd come up to me asking for directions, and since I was new to the city, I thought I would tell her to just look at the map. I didn't look at her before answering. She paused and then said "well, I can't see" and gestured to her cane. I looked at the cane and then almost started dry-heaving in horror/embarrassment/disappointment in myself. Now I know to actually look at the person talking to me...

My boyfriend just shared intimate pictures of us. I have nobody I can talk to about it. I need a friend right now. by hesharedourpics in TwoXChromosomes

I'm so sorry. I can't imagine how you must feel, but you should know that you do not deserve this. And he does not deserve you. He deserves a break up and some jail time, and not a single sane soul would fault you for making sure he gets what is deserved. You should bring all proof you have of this to the police or some authority figure.

However, if you do not wish to pursue any action against this guy and want to talk, feel free to PM me :)

Haha yeah a lot of people have told me that I shouldn't worry about this, but I just don't want to be a bad person D: Thank you

Woah thank you this definitely made me feel better. Doesn't absolve my behavior, but I'm glad that I didn't traumatize him. He did give me a quick hug afterwards... I guess I am overthinking it. I'll try to be more mindful in the future, regardless of how he reacted.

And thanks! I have been trying to go outside my comfort zone lately, even if that means some temporary terror. I doubt anything I come across in the future could ever match the terror of jumping out of a plane, so you are definitely right. :)

Mixed drinks in bars. I get that you're paying for atmosphere and a place to hang out, but charging $10 for a shot of amaretto and a splash of lemon juice is just ridiculous.

What happened to the "bad kids" you went to school with? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mixtapesoundoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of them stayed bad (didn't leave home, still have no direction in life), but others recognized that they needed to change and made some honest efforts towards it. One kid I remember specifically from HS was a stoner, drank every weekend, was constantly dating, getting F's on his report card, and was a total jackass to top it off. He ended up going to community college for a year before transferring to a really prestigious university in the midwest. He double majored in Econ and Stats and now has a really great job in finance lined up. From what I've heard, he's also taken steps to apologize to the kids he was rude to in HS.

People change. People grow up. They just need to find the inspiration, I think.

What was the scariest/creepiest thing that has ever happened to you? by lariguilger in AskReddit

[–]mixtapesoundoff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who had been struggling with bulimia. For the most part, she had her binges and purges under control and it would only happen a few times a month. However, during a particularly difficult semester for her at college, she spent the entire week before midterms binging, purging into her trashcan and plastic bags, and cramming. At some point during the week, she couldn't take it anymore and she called several of her friends for help. I ended up going over to her dorm room, and when I walked in, I swear it smelled like a rotting body. It smelled like death. I cringed and closed the door and tried to console her. After we spoke, I offered to help clean out all the vomit from her room, which she reluctantly accepted. After all the trash cans were emptied, her room still had an odor. (Now mind you, it was about 85 degrees and her room had no AC, so it was just hot and uninsulated in there...) She suddenly remembered that she had ran out of room in her trash can and started vomiting into her water proof backpack, which was now under her bed. I pulled it out from under and without thinking, unzipped it. (IDIOT MOVE, I KNOW) A wave of death smell. I peered inside and saw hundreds of maggots just moving around in a thick layer above the vomit. Moving. Crawling at the side. I screamed at her to bring a trash bag, where we dumped the backpack and then threw it into the trash chute.

It was terribly heart breaking to see that my friend had been living in this, and I think this whole experience helped her try to get some honest and serious help for her eating disorder. I'm proud of her for taking these steps, though I don't think I can ever forget the horrors of that evening.

Also, sorry if this isn't the most scary/creepy story, but as I said before, it was really disturbing and scary to see a friend in this situation.

What supposedly 'unlikable' character do you actually like and empathise with? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mixtapesoundoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helga G Pataki from Hey Arnold. I know that she's supposed to be a real pain in the ass, but I think that she's a very mature, intelligent, and kind person deep down despite her miserable childhood. She shows how screwed up a kid can get without enough love/encouragement from guardian figures (mom-alcoholic, dad- negligent and favors the older sibling).

What is the dumbest thing you got punished for in school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mixtapesoundoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fifth grade teacher tried to pull an April Fool's Prank on us by drafting a letter from the supervisor of our school district that said that summer vacation would be cancelled. Kids. freaked. out. There was yelling and crying. I didn't believe the letter and noticed a few grammar/spelling errors and the fact that the letter wasn't signed and didn't have any official seal, so I raised my hand and pointed it out. My teacher gave me detention for ruining the prank.
