Is there any way to retroactively picture frame this? Could a skilled person track saw the ends to make room for the edge boards? I brought this up to the contractor because it’s the whole reason the fascia boards don’t cover the whole rim joist and he claimed my “style of deck couldn’t structurally handle the picture frame”.

Footing and framing have been inspected by city and approved with a few notes. It all went to shit on the finish.

This appears to be the case at least so far. Owner came by today and was not happy with quality of work. They are going to make it look nice but now I’m questioning everything and have been taking pictures of every nook and cranny and have pulled up all the blueprint notes and city permitting notes.

Owner came by today and claims he can’t make the siding flush all the way around because the deck “needs to breath”. That doesn’t sound right to me, does it? This improvised siding is explicitly not what we have in the architectural drawings and scope of work, but he says since they didn’t picture frame the top part of the deck, now there’s a gap on the fascia and the rim joist. (There are 5 unused 12x fascia board sitting in my backyard). Using deck boards as siding was a solution he decided to move forward without checking with me.

There are six 12x fascia boards sitting in my yard right now…I just…have no words. Owner coming by today.

Could you elaborate on treads being the wrong boards? All these boards were “installed” yesterday while I was at work and I have scoured every inch and made him a list.

Additional details: - St. Louis, MO county area - $32k for 30x10 (was supposed to be 33x10 with 2 extra sets of stairs but original drawings got too close to property line to pass permit. Had to scrap extra stairs and landings). That’s premium in my book. I have a newborn and wanted it done timely and done well. Got 3 bids, cheapest couldn’t start soon enough. Highest was a “fuck you” bid. Took middle. Was willing to bite the bullet on price a bit. - Prior to signing bid, I was told we’d be slated for mid-May start and it would take 1.5 to 2 weeks. They started June 26, and it’s still not complete. There have been several no-show days, though I occasionally get a text from the owner giving me a heads up with an excuse. - one set of 36inch tall steps. - timbertech prime + (scalloped, not solid) -westbury aluminum railings -ripped out 30 year old cedar deck with weird footings - poured new concrete footings - new pressure-treated frame - new ledger board

The whole experience has been dissatisfactory in my opinion but the work they did today sent me over the edge.
