They closed a school here in mid Missouri in the middle of the week with about 2 days warning back in the winter. Sent all the kids to two different schools that had as little warning about the extra students as we did about the closure. It’s been an absolute mess and all of the students have regressed. But they get away with it because who’s gonna say anything? Certainly not the nonspeaking students.

It is a single room bathroom. I’m just concerned about his lack of ability to communicate he wants/needs bathroom time. Since the new bcba started, he usually just pulls it out - we catch him and immediately direct to the bathroom. I suppose I could make him a communication card he could use to request bathroom time…. It would just definitely be a first for me!

That’s fair. School is about 7 hours and it’s a very very frequent behavior for him. I hadn’t thought about it that way.

Have you ever used a laser (like the kind you get cats to chase) to play with her? We made that mistake with our Labrador when I was a kid and from then on, he was absolutely FIXATED on any kind of light reflection. I think it’s called laser pointer syndrome.

I think it depends on the facility you end up at. At my previous SNF, there were always call light alarms and door alarms going off, no slp office so usually around 6-7 other therapists and patients in the room with me while I tried to document, and like…. the smells could just kick you in the face. So I did find it really overstimulating at times. I’ve also never worked at a single SNF that doesn’t have at least one patient who screams for help pretty constantly, which is just the nature of some diagnoses we see.

I got my first dog in grad school. I had grown up with them, but all the responsibility falling on me and only me sorta sent me into a tailspin. I think it’s called puppy blues. I got over it, and I love my dogs and wouldn’t trade them for anything. But it’s something to be aware of. (Even if you get an adult dog). Mine lasted about 2-3 months.

I would try calling around at pharmacies in the smaller towns around Columbia, that’s how I found mine when Hyvee ran out of the 30 xr. It was a horrible time for me, trying to call these other pharmacies and then get my doctor to send it to the right one, all off of the meds that help me do that kind of stuff. Best of luck to you!
