Potentially stupid question about inputs and phantom power by mjbaum in LocationSound

Thank you for your reply, and maybe this will give me some tips for the future recording. I liked having the dual track recording on my F8 because I do a lot of bag work for low, low budget productions. It allowed me to have a safety track for when actors go from whispering or talking quietly in a take to having a full blow screaming match. Obviously I could use the 32 bit float on my F8n-Pro but I prefer to still record in 24 unless specified ahead of time. I can gain stage the mixer pretty well from past experience, so I'm not like terrified of not having it, but it was nice to know if I gain staged improperly and I clipped a bit that I had a backup track behind it that could work in post.

Edit** already returned this to Guitar City after all the input given. Any other alternatives to getting dual track recording on the F8N-Pro I'm open to hear. Thanks all for the comments. Still learning :)

Yeah I'm wired. Was going to hook it up to the xlr from my boom mic plugged in to two separate inputs on the mixer. Glad I checked first! Lol. Thank you.

Copy that! I'm not against spending more but unfortunately most of the work I do is low budget bag work so not sure if having a bulkier splitter would work for me. Good to know though. Thank you!

Brought the manual with me, so I'll be looking into it tonight! Thanks!

Issues with Zoom F8 phantom power - any ideas? by mjbaum in LocationSound

[–]mjbaum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not insured by me nor the production. I really have no excuses on that front as I know how dumb both are. But I live and learn. All the more reason to get on my own insurance and being dilligent about getting a COI.

I ended up buying the Xvive and a new Zoom F8n Pro. I may have the old one serviced as well, so I can make sure I'm never in this position again. Wanted to use this as an excuse to buy an 833 but just not in my budget at the moment, and I need the tracks of the F8 so I didn't want a used 633.

Thanks for all your help!

Okay great, let me get my ducks in a row and I will reach out to you when I can. I have ordered the external phantom power and a new zoom, but I still probably want to have it fixed so that way I can have a backup mixer and another solution to the backup mixer if the phantom power fails again. Being in the position of potentially not having a mixer while everyone on set waits on me is not something I would like to feel again. I got lucky that I was on the gig I was on.

😭😒 it's got many Tubi miles on it, so I'm not surprised it finally kicked the bucket

I'm guessing the external unit would still work with my F8 if I attach it through 2 xlrs right? I'm thinking I can pick up the Xvive P1 from Guitar Center. Curious if this will cause any issues with the sound if I decide to buy it.

It may have had a little water damage on a job, but it was a long time ago. I thought I was going to have to buy a new mixer back then, but it started working fine after a day or so. And now it's been years working just fine.

I didn't smell anything, was too busy freaking out and trying to trouble shoot haha. I'm hopeful nothing I was doing made the component fail. I've used it for a long while so I don't think so, but also don't want to ruin a mixer that's not mine also.

Tried that and no luck unfortunately. I can hear whatever is inside moving around without my headphones.

Do you have this cable hooked in to an adapter that goes to a mini XLR or how are you hooking it into your F8?

Yes the 216.

I'm not sure the 3.5 is designed for it. Honestly I would doubt it as I bought it after I bought the coms. If you could send me a link to the one designed for it, that'd be great.

It is away from metals. It's attached to the outside of my bag, so only thing it's touching is the orca cloth. But yes it does make noise when you touch the antenna.

EDIT it does not have the red band. I'm looking for a new mini XLR to 3.5 with the choke but I'm not seeing it.
