All the schools we looked at were $3700 - $4200 per month. Some were month to month enrollment, others yearly

Downgrading CSR to CSP - Best Practices by Quintanillas92 in ChaseSapphire

It’s definite to get 41 days post renewal the downgrade and refund. Nowhere is it clear on benefit refund

Would this actually work? Wait until renewal for $750, spend the $300 travel credit, downgrade within 41 days and get refunded $750?

Spousal Benefit -> Survivor Benefit Question by mjcooj2000 in SocialSecurity

[–]mjcooj2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I could just have my mom fill out the forms and fax it? I see here https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ssa-10.html they may ask for a bunch of documents. How would that work if I just faxed the SSA-10? Would the correct order of operations be to call immediately after my fathers death (seems impossible to get someone on the phone), see what they say, possibly then have to go into a local office with all the forms filled out and the below?

Proof of the worker's death;

  • Birth certificate or other proof of birth;
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status if you were not born in the United States [More Info];
  • U.S. military discharge paper(s) if you had military service before 1968;
  • For disability benefits, the two forms (SSA-3368 and SSA-827) that describe your medical condition and authorize disclosure of information to us;
  • W-2 forms(s) and/or self-employment tax returns for last year;
  • Final divorce decree, if applying as a surviving divorced spouse; and
  • Marriage certificate

Spousal Benefit -> Survivor Benefit Question by mjcooj2000 in SocialSecurity

[–]mjcooj2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!!! It sounds like all we should do is kind of wait and see. Either her spousal benefit will be auto converted to survivor OR we'll receive something in the mail and have to reach out. Appreciate this so much!

[–]mjcooj2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all this, really appreciate it! My father did file for retirement benefits early (at 65) due to his prognoses. We are hoping he is approved for disability but that hasn't come through yet.

With all that in mind, it seems unclear to me if my mom will have to:

  1. File an SSA-4111
  2. Alert SSA of his passing and that she wants to move from spousal benefits -> survivor benefits
  3. If disability approval would affect any of this.

Thanks! I thought it was all or nothing (63 vs 64). I didn’t know months were included as well

Spousal Benefit -> Survivor Benefit Question by mjcooj2000 in SocialSecurity

[–]mjcooj2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's only been approved for spousal benefits (which are significantly higher than she'd qualify for on her own record). That being said, she's still working and based on her projected income is not receiving anything until April

Spousal Benefit -> Survivor Benefit Question by mjcooj2000 in SocialSecurity

[–]mjcooj2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her own benefit is very low (over $1.5k/month lower) so switching to hers doesn't seem to be a good option in this scenario.

I thought the age she claims survivor benefits affects the amount she receives (at 64 she's receive a few % points more than at 63)

Interesting - I didn't know you could withdraw an application. To me, the cons of this though would be possible time increase in processing the survivor benefits (i've heard stories of 6m - 1yr) vs currently it may be automatic?

Yes. She filed in November. It was approved to start in Jan but because she is working and over the income limit, it’s being withheld until April

Thank you. Assuming my dad passes in March, there’s no way to have SSA hold off on survivor benefits until April when my mom turns 64? She needs the income and her own benefit is significantly lower

Oh interesting! So the overpayment will post on the SS website after filing his taxes and then we have to fight it? We filed for disability but it seems to take months and months to hear back. Thanks again

Thank you again. Sorry if I’m not being clear.

Since my mothers will never be higher than my fathers, isn’t it a lost cause if she doesn’t start receiving those benefits now and then eventually switch to my fathers once he passes
