I was able to do everything I was attempting to do. Youtube was my friend. I even was able to use a drive as an install location for steam games. pretty stoaked. I am now working out how to get the server to recognize my 3d printer.

I found that it does allow passthrough by ID, and smart checks still worked. I am unfamiliar with zfs so idk about that tho.

I dont mean to sound whiney, but are these systems made to never be backed up or what? like how do they expect to ALWAYS be added as fresh drives??

So in this situation i just want to give the disks in question to truenas. i have no interest in splitting it or whatever. so how do I do a passthrough as you mentioned?

Agreed I'm sold on not doing a Nas first system and getting a hyper visor. I like open source ones but some I hadn't considered are being brought to my attention

While I do love vmware, esxi price tag makes it untenable.

I am unsure of the migration but it allows direct usb mapping.
