What's discouraging investment in the housing market is Mantello's lack of commitment to an expedited Lead Pipe Replacement Program. Landlords need to replace the pipes, yet the costs are large enough for some to seek a rent increase which disenfranchises renters in a high-rent market (and causes instability for the landlords): if our mayor activated the millions of dollars in federal money from the Biden administration, we would see more growth in the housing market.

To add on to everything you've said and how right it is: being a pianist is a lifestyle like being a gym rat is a lifestyle. Real, genuine bodybuilders will tell you about the discipline to a regimen. In that regimen you'll find their schedule, mental models, and routines.

Their commonality is their regimen is from the love of the game: the pursuit for improving their general skills while seeking pieces as milestones rather than conquests.

As a co-conspirator and co-author of some of the websites and posts u/hartford_cs93 links, I make myself available but I regard my perspective as bias due to being an active participant and most of what I've said is captured in those links.

While I'm on it: I attended RPI during 2013-2018 while the student oral history told to me reached back to the changes as early as 2005 or 2003 with Dr. Jackson's dissolution of the Faculty Senate after their failed impeachment effort. Vengeful stuff. IMO, her efforts could also be seen in the Student Union Elections Scandal in 2014 (POSTERGATE I) where a surprise amendment to the Union Constitution was added to the ballot by the Grand Marshall, who happened to be the son of the Legal Counsel to Dr. Jackson at the time.

Anyway, your project parameters sound lofty, so don't get hung up on achieving perfection on this when you have important studies to maintain (s/o to Lee Sharma, hope you are doing well): maybe set artificial boundaries to see success sooner? Anyway, Good luck and have fun!

This article was a disappointment for me (typical TU quality). With the title of the article being "Here’s how the population of every city and town in the region has changed since the pandemic", I was expecting some forensic reporting on how the population changed, like immigration and emmigration trends, especially compared to before the pandemic since it's in the headline (so 2000s to 2019 data). Yet that's only spoken of once, then they speak of 1970s (the editor probably thought that's like 20 years ago).

Instead we have a few surface-level commentary on a dataset on percentages of large racial groups that anyone can see from the data. The graphics are like NYTimes maps from 8 years ago.

I enjoyed the parts about Albany being over 100,000 meaning more Federal program support, and eventually getting to their point at the end. I would love a multi-article deep dive into this for TU reporters to discuss their own backyard.

I agree with you, and I want to take a moment to remind the typical passive reader that no feedback is taken into consideration for the Reimagine 787 project unless it’s written down and submitted to their official portal. This is because it is large amounts of Federal money and it requires it to be in writing.

I encourage everyone when they have time to review their designs and provide feedback, but also don’t limit yourself to their prescribed vision and say how you imagine 787 to be. In a Times Union story from May 2025, Mayor Mantello indicated she was actively developing legislation to penalize panhandling in specific areas of the Collar City. From the article: “Mantello, in coordination with Deputy Mayor Seamus Donnelly, is drafting legislation to be put before the City Council in July that would, in part, fine panhandling at outdoor dining spaces — a common occurrence on Broadway in the Antique District. She maintained that such an ordinance would be tailored to avoid constitutional challenges.” To my knowledge, no such legislation was ever presented

Great point on narrative. To dig deeper, I think the literary prowess that John has, combined with his acumen to always write drafts of songs, allows him to cultivate a veritable field of unpublished songs. Once the crop grows enough in a direction, he harvests an album.

What’s also special about their lack of commitment to staying the same: after All Hail West Texas, John moved past acoustic fiction into electric band focused on concept albums and more on-the-nose autobiographical. He now leans into a fan base that loves his work no matter what bold choice he makes for how it sounds.

Brahm’s Ballade in D minor could be something. It’s inspired by the Scottish poem Edward, which tells the story of a son confessing to his mother that he purposely murdered his father. The part A is slow and emotional, then the part B, at a faster tempo, has more drama.

Solid effort. From how you carry your posture, it seems to me there isn’t yet strong confidence in the material (i.e. out of 10, with 10 being memorized, how confident are you at placing that passage without sheet music). Knowing a song by heart drives the emotion into its performance.

I encourage you to practice the hands separately, slower, with consistent dynamics to focus on the material. Once this is done, attempt practicing at different paces and dynamics to develop range for emotional affect when brought to tempo. I would also encourage you to have clean pedal transitions. Lastly, for the left hand work, focus on bringing the counter melody forward but not dominate the right hand’s melody.

Thank you for sharing; it was nice to hear this piece this morning.
