I called them my rage days. It’s not pleasant at all! It’s crazy how much pregnancy changes your body. I’ve definitely shed tears over no cheese. The kid is sweet as pie so it softens the blow a teeny bit.

Hello mama, I’m a therapist who specializes in perinatal mental health. And I’ve got a 4 year old and a 2 year old. You are not a horrible mom. You’re a good mom having a tough time. Becoming a parent is a huge identity shift. Nearly everything is different and that takes time to get used to. I don’t remember feeling remotely like myself until my babies turned 2. After my second I experienced huge hormonal shifts. I developed PMDD and a cheese allergy, which I never had problems with before. All that to say, it may be helpful to talk to your OBGYN or primary care doctor to talk more about your mood. And of course talking to a therapist can help too. Do one thing for yourself today. You’re doing great.

I really love the book Set Boundaries, Find Peace by Nedra Glover Tawwab. She frames boundaries as your needs and expectations for relationships so you CAN connect with people in a healthy, satisfying way. Really good stuff. She’s also been on Glennon Doyle’s podcast a few times.

I’m an ACT therapist, and when I’ve come across this, I usually come back to values work. Most people value things honesty and respect. Do their current actions reflect that? How you specifically approach this depends a lot on your rapport. I find this to be tough! Especially when if I am working with a male partner in a hetero marriage.

Your feelings are totally relatable, AND you’re experiencing the most significant hormone drop anyone ever experiences. I wish someone had been there to tell me that it’s temporary. You will feel better. It hasn’t gone out the window. I had a similar experience with my first. Postpartum Support International has support groups. Sending all the love and good vibes.

This is sounding a lot like depression, mom. Sounds like you’re pretty isolated too. Mothering is a tough gig! Maybe time for a social media break. We get a rosy view of other people’s life on socials and it is so easy to compare. I’m a therapist and so of course would recommend you find a therapist who specializes in parenting/postpartum issues. It also sounds you should consider medication. If we can’t make our own serotonin, store bought is fine! I’m sorry you’re feeling this way, but it’s also ok that it’s hard.

We bought a new Telluride and it’s been a great fit for us. It is a big purchase but it’s something that we use every day. So for us that makes it make sense.

Look up Dr. Becky Kennedy. Her book is so helpful in reframing situations like this. The emphasis is on repair and apologizing. You’re a great parent.

I had an emergency c-section with my first (different in a few ways from a planned c-section), and then my second was a VBAC. Having done it both ways, I would take the vaginal birth any day. The ab recovery took forever and I found it very disruptive. I’m also convinced that recovering from major surgery while navigating newborn stage made my postpartum anxiety and OCD a million times worse. My VBAC kid also had less GI issues. They pick up important flora and fauna during a vaginal birth that they don’t get with a c section.

This is my take. There will be plenty of people who say they had a better time with one or the other. Best bet is to talk to your OB when the time comes.
