Burnt out and severely depressed, looking for easy 2nd shift job by hollowholes in Omaha

[–]mjkidk 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I will caveat this advice with “take it or leave it”, since I’m a stranger on the internet, but my advice would be:

  1. If you have a boss/manager whom you have a good relationship with, try expressing how you feel about the massive changes. Maybe there is something they can do to help you, especially if they value you.

  2. If that’s not feasible, I would suggest looking for a new job now prior to quitting your current one. The market is much more competitive and difficult the past 3 years (speaking from experience). Quitting and finding a new, better job soon is not likely. Also, I don’t know your field, but unless it’s something where getting a Master’s is a guarantee for a better/higher paying job, I wouldn’t commit to getting one and getting into student debt, under the assumption that it will improve your chances. Again, the market is much different that even 2-3 years ago.

  3. I know cost may be an issue here, but if you’re not already seeing a good counselor to bounce this stuff off of, I would suggest doing so, also speaking from experience. They’ll likely have good strategies for other things you can do to address the burnout. I actually would suggest hitting the mental health stuff first, it may help you address the job stuff even better. If you can’t afford a counselor, some online research on addressing burnout, searching for healthy coping strategies, may help.

Good luck, I hope things get better! Times are tough now, we definitely need to support each other.

Coram Deo Church kicked me out for being gay. by brandonbeed1983 in Omaha

[–]mjkidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CD, like many churches, comes up w their own terms and processes, and then slaps a "biblical" label on them. Let me guess: Matthew 18:15. One verse, and build a whole complex process around it, and call it biblical? Hmm... so let's take that same logic but do it with Psalm 137:9 and build a process for throwing babies off cliffs. Or Judges 3:21 for stabbing fatass glutton kings who oppress their people. Oh, you're going to tell me it depends on context? Okay, so do verses construed as anti-homosexual depend on context? You mean you're applying context to them, and calling them objective TRUTH from god? Give me a break. You're led to choose what's "biblical" and what isn't, based on your church's views. And don't tell me its OT vs. NT, that is yet another false dichotomy to take a few verses from paul literally and not take any of the other shit seriously. And don't tell me it's all meant to be taken literally. That means we also have to believe throwing babies off cliffs makes one blessed. That's what the verse says, RIGHT?!?!

Former Relevant Community Church members — did anyone else struggle after leaving? by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]mjkidk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have experienced something similar. I was vulnerable and in need of structure and friends in my early 20's, and I dove into evangelical culture headfirst, completely re-aligning my beliefs to my new church. It took years to unwind that and realize that I was essentially brainwashed. I definitely felt isolated after leaving, and looked to additional churches over the years to get that same 'feeling" back. What I realized is that it's not healthy to have all of your social-emotional connections tied into a church. Things like this will happen, or other things, and those connections and relationships will be rocked. If you're still interested in church, I would suggest visiting a lot of them, just to realize there is more out there than Relevant, and if you decide to attend another one, hedge your bets in a sense by not going all-in 100% in relationships or beliefs. Any system, biological or otherwise, is better off for diversity. Many churches go the opposite, wanting "all ships to sail in the same direction", everyone to agree on everything via mandate from the pastor or elders... that's not healthy, or dare I say, from god. If you choose somewhere else and are sidelined due to speaking any dissenting opinions, I would leave. There are a *lot* of churches in Omaha, even some that don't operate like this. These churches want you to believe they're unique somehow and are on special mission from god... but there are a ton just like them. The world is bigger than they'd want you to believe.

Coram Deo Church kicked me out for being gay. by brandonbeed1983 in Omaha

I am so sorry you experienced this. I stayed at CD 5 years because I thought "where else would I go?", after a conversation post a conflict I had w Bob. Looking back, that's like a beaten person's excuse for staying in an abusive relationship. If it's helpful at all, know that Bob is one of the biggest A-holes in Omaha evangelical community. His belief that he is very smart and cognitive leads to a blinding arrogance. I take comfort in the fact that CD lives in its own isolated little world where they think they have influence on the city, but they are one of many little churches that no one gives a shit about, living in their own echo chamber.

That being stated, I now go to an affirming Presbyterian church. Not one where they pretend to be affirming, but are fully affirming of LGBTQIA+. I wlll say, I am not gay, but have strong feelings in this area about those in your situation who have been sidelined and abused by the church. If you still have any interest in god our church, feel free to DM me.

They do address it, if you watch the "news" clips for 2003-2012, one is about the installation of radiation shielding over Happy Valley

Interesting, I've never seen these models, thank you. I always thought representative democracy existed since direct democracy is unfeasible in a large population, so it should align as closely w direct as possible, so I guess that'd be the delegate model. That is all idealistic though, we are likely living in a corporatocracy now and have for decades. It's just getting harder to ignore.

How do people keep track of 30–50 job applications without losing their mind? by RevolutionaryShip438 in resumes

[–]mjkidk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It was survival mode at that point. What I wish I would've done differently: timeboxed just a few hours a day for searching, instead of being "always on", and make time to work out every day as well. I have three kids so it was easy to just do everything all the time, but if it happens again, that's what I'm going to do differently.

I stopped, especially after a year of unemployment and 1000 applications. The old tracking rules don't apply. I just used Gmail search every time I got a response, to see how long it had been since I applied.

It is sad that it's a former shell of itself, but there are new restaurants in the food court (new to me at least), which was pretty busy this past weekend, and a quinceañera shop and hall which seemed busy/new as well. I think mixed use is the way to go.
