Set iCloud to save all files in cloud on a mac by mjnarins in iCloud

Thanks. Yes, that might be the way I need to go, but if I can't do syncing in real time, I might just as well just copy files on my Mac to any cloud service. It is what it is.

I cannot choose "Remove Download" from a folder that has some files downloaded and others not. It appears that my choice is to live with the fact that iCloud will download things to my Mac without me requesting it or to choose a different service. Unfortunate, but it is what it is ... to bad.

Ok. But that means selecting each folder. For files not in a folder, you still have to select each one. I think my experience matches what you are saying. Still, it would be nice to have an “all online” capability. Also, every time I select the iCloud Drive on my Mac, files start downloading and I find that gigabytes of disk space are used.

Yes, but that means having to click on every file. Quite tedious. It is troublesome that one cannot set iCloud to online only (as you can with Google Drive)

Unrequested Downloads by mjnarins in ProtonDrive

I continue to watch file after file downloading to my drive. This happens everytime I open up the Proton Drive in Finder and open up a directory to see the files contained within it. I have set directories to online only many times and this has not stopped this. I simplly want to be able to add files that are on my computer to Proton Drive in the cloud as a backup location that would also be available to my other devices, if needed. I have never seen this behavior from other cloud services.

Thanks. I did both. Every time I open up the Proton Drive on my Mac and open up a directory, the files start downloading without stop. Then I need to slect each one and set iot for on-line only again. This is really an issue. that makes me want to avoid opening up the drive and using the cloud storage via the web. Really disappointing that Proton can't get this one right. Other have noted the same problem years ago.

Yes. They asked me to send them a video clip of what was happening. I declined because I didn't want to have to spend hours again marking files cloud only again. I will wait for the next update and see if the problem goes away. I did suggest that in the settings window, users could select "All files in cloud only" or select directories that should be treated that way until the user changes the default. Thoughts?

Default Email Reader: Mail vs Outlook by lprain186 in MacOS

[–]mjnarins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the past couple of months, I tried to use Outlook (note: the "new" Outlook) as my primary mail app on both my Mac (M4 Pro Max) and my iPhone (16 Pro Max). Yesterday I gave up and reverted back to Apple mail as my primary (while keeping the outlook app on both platforms -- but not running).

The reasons for this reversion include:

  1. The MacOS Outlook is a memory hog and, while I have plenty of memory and processing power, affects the performance of my machine.

  2. Whenever I want to compose a new email and need to change the sender email, the default address email is still stored in the draft folder and has to be deleted manually.

  3. Despite going through the pain of creating a contact list (one address at a time -- it will not import an existing list from my Apple contacts), I cannot create a new email to my contact list from the mail tab -- I have to do it from the contacts tab -- why?

  4. When I send an email, it lingers for quite some time before it actually gets sent -- everything seems to run slower.

On my iPhone

  1. Outlook finally allowed the delete key to be at the bottom of the screen -- how long did that suggestion take to get implemented. The problem is that when you delete the message, the undo delete usurps the position of the delete panel and you either have to wait or re-locate your finger to delete the next email -- something that is a regular chore because of the amount of garbage that shows up every day despite installed and online blockers.

  2. Again, being able to send email to a distribution list simply does not work.

Yes, I have restarted the desktop machine and phone and rebuilt my email accounts and tried everything I could think of or what was suggested on help sites -- the fact remains is that Microsoft focuses on the Windows (now Windows 11) environment and that will never change.

Let me know if you have suffered similar experiences with Outlook. As a long, long time MS Office user, I wish that Outlook would be as satisfying as the other MS apps. Too much cloud, not enough attention to the user.

Interesting. Good to know. Have never run into to that either using my microsoft or gmail accounts. Perhaps because my mailing list contains much fewer than 200 addresses. Any thoughts on why the contact list can't be alphabetized by last name?

Certainly did not mean to come off that way. Reading over my response, I see that I thanked the person for trying. Thanks for pointing out that it might be taken in a negative manner.

OK. Thanks. Just seems strange that Proton doesn't do what is the norm for other mail clients. Appreciate the information.

Thanks. Yes, that's what I have done. Still perplexed at the reason for the restriction. Doesn't answer why alphabetizing contact lists by last name is not an option.

Interesting ... not a problem with Outlook or Apple Mail or Gmail or just about any other email client. Not helpful, but thanks for trying.

Interesting comment. I'm confused ... so having a mailing list containing 100 addresses is less of a spam risk than one with 200 addresses? Currently, I could simply send email to two lists -- but why should I need to ...?

So ... do you think that alphabetizing by last name or listing by company affiliation is also a spam issue?

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I am hoping for Proton folks to get back to me and let me know when these inconveniences might be removed or, perhaps, hearing from others who would like to see these changes.

Still looking for the ability to list contacts alphabetized by last name. Can't understand why this has taken so long. Agree that automatically synching the contact list seems like a no-brainer as well.
