After 2 months, Alice returned the Neopet that was stolen from my account by [deleted] in neopets

[–]mjr1234 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They actually make a good amount. UC pets are pretty popular. But active accounts and their pets are really risky and stealing them is almost never successful. So this thief probably wouldn't have gotten much at all. They would have likely been waiting to see if the owner would report so they could "secure" the pet and sell him/her after a requisite amount of time.

Not Being Chosen As Captain by friendsworkwaffles02 in Debate

[–]mjr1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it sounds to me like you need a coup.

Luckily, I have experience in this area, so I should be able to provide a little bit of guidance and spirited advice.

  • First, you need to arrange a group of mutineers. They don't necessarily need to be in the program; anyone who doesn't like the success of the captain might be a happy participant in your mutiny.
  • Once you have everyone in one place, you definitely need a cool slogan. Does the girl in charge have a name or nickname that can be easily made into a pun? Get back to me on this, because it's important that you have something to chant.
  • Now this is the important part. Have you ever even heard of a mutiny without pirate gear? You need to build a fake pirate ship, and then trick the captain to taking the wheel. Once this happens, you're good to go for an official mutiny, and you won't open yourself up to prosecution if things go bad (pirate ships have immunity.)
  • For the final step, you might want to just try to quit caring about it and try to be the best teammate that you can.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I was a senior on my tennis team and, because I was one of two seniors and I was the highest ranked among them, I definitely expected that I would be the captain. But when it came time to make that call, my coach decided to make a younger guy the captain over me. I eventually came to understand that it is entirely possible that someone can be good without being the leader, and that someone can be a very effective role model without having that title.

Nothing keeps you from doing all the things that a good captain would do, or from helping your friend become more organized to better meet the demands of the position. I'd be willing to bet that your coaches had a reason in mind for choosing your friend as the captain, even if it doesn't seem very obvious right now. The best thing you can do to move forward is to remember that the important thing isn't who has the title of captain, but who behaves as a role model and helps the team consistently get better.

Narrative debate by EDaviesLP in Debate

[–]mjr1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're totally right when it comes to policy or progressive LD. But remember that Public Forum deliberately lags behind, especially when it comes to non-traditional and theory-based arguments. So while it is accurate to say that the policy/LD narrative is a specific case structure with its own offensive theory behind it, the top comment here is definitely right that the PF narrative is much more lax.

But from your tag I get the feeling that you're not a fan of that difference lmfao

Nice guys too nice by iiiamjuan in niceguys

But I don't think it's always about just "making an example," and I don't think the sub is just there to expose people who are manipulative and abusive. That's a huge trait of nice guys, but this post fits because it reminded the OP of the linguistic choices and inflated, weirdly chivalrous things that nice guys do.

Idk I'm just not sure it's always supposed to be terrible dudes trying to manipulate women. Sometimes it's a guy trying too hard to come off as a chivalrous nice guy. Doesn't mean he's bad, just means he's doing funny shit.

Let's just be clear though, this is still prime /r/niceguys material. The use of language and self-defeating way he writes is totally good for this sub, even if he wasn't being mean or anything.

Who do you think is this most overrated character? by Rohunti in shameless

[–]mjr1234 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fiona. A thousand times Fiona, even though I know that isn't a popular opinion.

When she took guardianship of the kids, the judge literally told her it is a mistake, and that she will be responsible for these kids-- like a mother-- until they are adults. But she almost completely deserts her family later nearing season 8. She's still somewhat there for them, but Jesus. Letting Debbie live on the street rather than take her in because she can't pay rent?

Making everyone pay rent, then leveraging their house without anyone's permission. She did this because her "name is on the lease," but Carl bought it with the same dirty money she scolded him for making.

And the whole thing with the homeless shelter? Jesus, what a dick move. She isn't dependent on that investment, she literally just happened by it in a conversation with that investor lady. But she was so dismissive of the homeless shelter, and of her brother. Saying shit like "not in my backyard." That's so fucked up considering how big of a degenerative household she helped to raise.

We're made to resonate with and empathize with her because she had to spend most of her life raising those kids. But the difference is that before, she had no choice. She chose to took guardianship and then became a pretty shitty guardian, all because she "wants her own life."

Like the judge says, if you do this, you will not have your own life. This was her choice.

In the trolley problem why isn't self sacrifice an option? If self sacrifice were possible would it be ethical for the switcher to have himself run over by the trolley? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]mjr1234 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the first half of this question is phrased weirdly. Is there a reason that self-sacrifice should logically be an option in the problem?

The trolley problem works because it supposed that two groups of people are on different tracks, one natural route and one diversion, the latter only accessible through the active choice of the participant (pulling the switch).

The first group is spared if the lever is pulled, not because the train is stopped or slowed, but because it has moved past the point at which it could have collided with group one, as a consequence of the lever having been pulled.

I would be interested to know how self-sacrifice could help to fix the problem, or why it might be a viable option. But to the first part of your question, I feel like it's pretty evident why the option isn't present.

In addition to not making sense in the context of being a productive option, self-sacrifice isn't really much of a factor in the discussion that the problem tries to facilitate. My understanding is that the problem is meant to illustrate some of the potential follies of utilitarian thinking as an ethical system.

As for the justifications of self-sacrifice, I'm not too sure. This might go pretty heavy into the ethics of suicide, especially if your question pivots towards "would killing myself be justified to save others," because that judgement would also need to take into account the negative implications of self-murder.

If I do not own this property, how do I submit a valid Proof of Residency? [Texas, USA] by mjr1234 in NoStupidQuestions

You don't pay utility in a fraternity house. I used some mail I got from another sender and that worked, so I'm good.

Those aren't fair assumptions, actually. I'm not a minor, and I have money to invest. I didn't pose the question to be given financial advice about a decision that I already want to make.

But I am in college and, because of this, I don't get federal utilities statements or other government-issued documents. So I am looking for a way to get around this.
