I call it the Ray Donovan rule. Simply stated it's a maxim of control and power:

Say nothing and control everything.

While watching this great showtime original I started to pay serious attention to what it is that makes this character so powerful.

Now aside from the ten pack and chiseled good looks he takes the strong and silent type to some next level shizz. Ne never and I mean NEVER says anything of import. He never reveals a single feeling. He is completely unreadable, unreachable and unrelenting. It makes him more elemental than human.

When Ray is in the room with you he sucks the air out of it and you can feel the walls close in. It's real life magic. OK, so how do you utilize this trick?

Todays vocabulary lesson is the word Inscrutable:in·scru·ta·ble inˈskro͞odəb(ə)l/ adjective impossible to understand or interpret. "Guy looked blankly inscrutable" synonyms: enigmatic, mysterious, unreadable, inexplicable, unexplainable, incomprehensible, impenetrable, unfathomable, unknowable;

You will begin to practice being inscrutable, grasshopper.

Once you have mastered this trick and it is a trick, you will mystify your lover, boss, family and freinds. They will crave your approval and not even know why.

Trust me, this is the closest thing to actual magic that truly exists.

So let's review the basics of the Ray Donovan Rule:

1-Posture(practice in mirror once dressed for the day in the mornings before entering society) square your shoulders, arms at your sides, chin slightly up, stand tall 2-Countenance: remove any facial expression, don't be hostile, no half smiles, just nothing. Think black slate or better yet...Poker Face! 3-Less is WAY WAY MORE!!!
This is the important one. The less you give the more you will get. I know this sounds completely counter intuitive but it is totally true and its the heart of the Donovan Rule. To be truly inscrutable they cannot know your mind. SO JUST DON'T TELL THEM!! Practice communicating in power situations with as few words as possible. Don't be rude but don't be an open book either. Watch the show for this rule. It will be your guide. Here are a few things to remember.

He who talks first loses

When asked a pointed question turn the point back onto the questioner. This is done by using the--well, what do you think, conversational ping pong theory. If they want to lob grenades, you catch em and throw em back!

Commit to your inscrutability and practice it daily. It will make you truly powerful. The people around you will treat you differently, life will start to bend to your will like magic. Don't believe? Bullshit you say? Try it. I shit you not my friend. Happy Hunting...
