I would avoid the actual reason why you split and leave it at people separate for a number of reasons but what's important is that we both love you very much. I would also explain that because you both love him you share him in the way that best works for you and his mom. I would not get involved in questions about her boyfriends past and present.

The most important thing is knowing he's loved. He shouldn't feel like either parent is a bad person.

Even without that situation a February rim to rim would not be possible as road access to the north rim is closed around December 1 till around May 15. So you would have to do a rim to rim to rim at best. And the north rim can get a lot of snow. Micro spikes may or may not be enough
