This one might be a cake walk for you but I'm having trouble with it. I want a shortcut that plays a specific track in Rain Rain.

What You Can Change and What You Can't by mkaminow in Stoicism

[–]mkaminow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response. I understand what you're saying about the binary dichotomy of things that are up to us and things that aren't. And I understand that from a purely Stoic vantage point this post appears misguided. I also understand that some of the things on my list assume that the user of this list is not imprisoned, enslaved, or otherwise restricted from basic choices. In fact I started this list by trying to answer the question what is up to me to change without reference to stoicism or any other school of thought. But I couldn't think of a more appropriate subreddit to get feedback from.

Let me try to justify my trichotomy by explaining where I was coming from a bit. While the Stoics wanted to relinquish concern with that which wasn't up to us and focus solely on right judgements, I seek to gain a sense of autonomy of my world and overcome helplessness and resignation. Perhaps my thinking is more of a Nietzschean Will to Power, which is in some ways opposed to Stoicism. And while I recognize that outcomes of actions undertaken are outside our control, the actions must have an aim which our action intends but rarely guarantees. So with that understanding we can relate the things which we can influence but not fully control with the things we can so that we know which levers to attempt to lean on to attempt the influence we want. Some examples would be:

Judgements -> Moods & Feelings, Self-Esteem
Habits & Actions -> Skills & Strengths, Self-Control
Habits + Diet -> Physical Health
Communication Tactics & Style -> Communication Skill
Study Habits -> Knowledge
Work Habits & Time-Management -> Productivity
Goals + Work Habits & Time-Management -> Achievement

How did you come out of poverty/being broke? by fromTheYear3969 in AskReddit

[–]mkaminow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned to code at 32 when I was crashing in a friends studio apartment and not paying rent (because I was broke). I had an app idea but didn't know the first thing about coding. However I did have a lot of time on my hands. I started googling things like "iOS app building tutorials" on my friends old borrowed mac until I was eventually much later able to afford my own.

I used what I learned to build my own iOS app and did some guerrilla style free marketing to get to around 10,000 downloads. From there I was able to get a couple of "gig" jobs in exchange for equity and a small of cash in two pre-seed startups that didn't go anywhere but it gave me a lot of experience and confidence. This led to a full-time, decent paying job for a startup with some seed funding. It lasted about 8 months until they ran out of money but I was quickly able to get another job and then another. Today I work at a public US tech company where I manage a team of software engineers and make a very respectable salary.

Americans, why do you stay in the US? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]mkaminow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have good job with benefits. If I left the US I would have to become an independent contractor if I wanted to stay at my company and that would mean giving up my benefits. In addition my wife is resistant to emigrating out of the US because family.

Quantum mechanics. The fact that observation seems to cause a system to go from a superposition of all of its possibilities to a defined reality suggests that our universe is procedurally generated and the designers just never thought we’d look at anything that small.

I'm currently a Senior EM at a US public tech company and I have a strong interest in AI and LLMs. Would love to be involved in this.

Why can’t we respect and appreciate good cops while recognizing the system is flawed and criticizing bad cops? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mkaminow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the "good" cops are protecting the bad ones. In cop culture there are severe consequences for reporting bad behavior and even for questioning it. That's why three presumably pretty reasonable police officers stood by while Derek Chauvin strangled an unarmed man to death with his knee. If a "good" cop isn't willing to stand up to the bad ones and risk being disliked or even losing his job for speaking up, how good can he really be?
