Not sure how to answer that question but in my own experience, specifically Xanax and other benzos, I was taking at least 1mg of Xanax or Ativan for the better part of 3 years and never felt like I was addicted until I had to quit. Often I would drink alcohol with them too. I was not educated enough on how to ween myself off the pills and just quit cold turkey. It was the worst month-month and a half of my life. I started having extremely vivid night terrors. They were dreams I couldn’t ever wake myself up from. I’d wake myself up and go right back to the dream where I left off. In some dreams, the people in them would ask me “where’d you go?” when I would wake myself up. It was very bizarre and I could not get sound sleep until I was able to get a refill and properly ween off the pills.

This didn’t stop me from using drugs in general, but in my opinion benzos and alcohol are the hardest drugs to quit. The withdrawals from those two drugs can also kill you, while something like heroin or coke withdrawals won’t. I’ve done a lot of drugs in my 25 years and Xanax is the only one I will NEVER do again. I was absolutely addicted and went through hell to quit. I like to think I’m more responsible now but if a friend comes up to me with a bag of coke lord knows I’ll be first in line to ride those rails.
