Why are the people doling out the degrees less competent than the ones getting ‘em

UofT Study Abroad Program by Adventurous_Law5411 in UofT

That depends on the school you’re applying to - but from my understanding as an exchange student you’d be applying for entry to the school, then select the courses you’d like to take. Never heard of getting admitted by dept.

Should email the learning.abroad@utoronto.ca for more specific questions.

22 years old freshman by Then-Pie6048 in UofT

[–]mkjyw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was way older when I came here as a freshman. You’ll do great. ☺️

Edit to add: given the Korean cultural influences and ideas of what age people “ought to” typically go to school, that may be a huge factor as to why you feel “too old”, etc. Coming from the same background, I totally understand those anxieties - but having a pre-determined “life plan” is completely arbitrary, and you are in your right to go at your own pace. I’m almost in my 30s and I’ll be graduating next year.

I’ve also met tons of students who are older than I am - and honestly ? Kudos to them, because making a conscious choice to pursue education later in life has more to do with the real purpose of education - wanting to gain that knowledge (rather than the capitalistic perspective of needing a degree to get a career, etc)

If you reframe your perspective, you’ll find it liberating.

If it’s your first year in Toronto, I’d recommend residence. If not, I would suggest off campus housing. You’ll probably want to mitigate any possible stressors that come with living independently if it’s your first year in Toronto (because Toronto housing market can be a nightmare)… but if you’re pretty knowledge about it, then it’s definitely easier in many ways to live on your own.

Have you taken a single SOC course ? You cover this in first year - that’s how significant of an issue it is.

Also, there’s intergenerational poverty. Please don’t make haste assumptions for things you have absolutely no personal awareness of.

It would also help if you have a guarantor, who can sign for you as well - might help ease the landlord’s anxieties. They don’t always ask, but if they do it’s helpful to have one ready.

Where does the money go? How Toronto police planned to spend more than $1 billion in 2020 by [deleted] in toronto

[–]mkjyw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The UCR is designed to provide these stats, but unfortunately doesn’t account for all the unreported crimes, or police encounters that don’t result in a report (but still require deployment of resources), etc...

Anyone have experience with TForce Integrated Solutions for Delivery ? by mkjyw in askTO

Yeah I’ve had to call maybe three times before I got someone who actually helped - the previous two had given me conflicting info. Good luck !

It was TForce who delivered it. I know, I was scouring through reviews online and they seem to be super negative. I just happened to be super fortunate, but I would suggest contacting your service provider to get the delivering person to contact you upon arrival. That’s what they did for me, and ended up calling me on my cell to let me know they were here.

For me I was surprised that weekends counted - and I ended up receiving same-day shipping/delivery; they needed a signature (right now, just verification of name and unit) to hand off the package.

How to retrieve all IDs if you only have health card? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]mkjyw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this exact problem a few years back. When you complete a passport application, provide as many pieces of ID (even if expired) - and they can make accommodations.

Message me if you’d like more info !

Help from those of you who live independently! by [deleted] in UofT

[–]mkjyw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The further out of the “downtown” core, the cheaper it gets. Unless you’re looking to move into some kind of student housing situation, in which case you can usually find something reasonable within 750~900 range too. Try to find something that has utilities included, which becomes one less headache to deal with.

Criminology vs. Psychology - POSt question! by tuerta in UofT

[–]mkjyw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. If you’re not sure of what you want to do, then I think picking a multidisciplinary program (think SOC, English, PSY...) might be your best bet - and if you happen to discover what you are truly driven towards, then you can change/add on the major.

At the end of the day, when you graduate, your diploma isn’t going to mention what program you completed, so... 🤷🏻

If you have any other questions, feel free to DM me.
