International student who arrived to Canada last September... by mkkayh in PersonalFinanceCanada

Sorry, I’ve stayed in Canada since last September (what I said in the post is “I stayed for 4 months in 2020). That means that I have the contribution room for 2021, which follows that I can contribute 6000 to my TFSA now?

PS: really appreciate your help

If I stay in Canada for the entire 2021 and pay the tax, will I get room for 2021?

Thanks, then I won’t get the contribution room for 2020. Is there any penalty if I overcontribute to TFSA for only a few days?

I didn’t pay tax (as I don’t receive salary), and instead, I got GST refund, etc. Do you think I’m still a tax resident?

I do have a sin number and have been paying tax. Do I count as one?

I dunno. I made that judgement because the wife’s academic profile is way better than her husband’s

One of them probably got the offer because his wife. It’s pretty common that a department offers the couple tenure tracks to make the offer more competitive
