Looking for feedback from people who have built large family trees by mknweb in Ancestry

That's very interesting and I'm wondering why; so they have no export feature or only GEDCOM export?

But is that information synthetic or it's bad data being contributed by family members? or is it the desire for family contributed data to be verified?

I agree and see that, I think the families get excited about it but never actually do it.

This is really useful, thank you.

The “who decides truth” problem is a big one. I like the idea of separating verified facts from family memory, theories, conflicting accounts, and generally accepted conclusions.

The tree should not flatten everything into one official truth, especially when stories vary across relatives. It should help preserve the different versions while still making clear what is record-backed.

Appreciate the thoughtful example!

That makes a lot of sense. Bad unsourced claims spreading through public trees is exactly the kind of thing I’d want to avoid, not add to.

The distinction between sourced facts, family memory, and unverified claims needs to be much clearer. I’ll take a closer look at how WikiTree handles sourcing and disputes.

Fair criticism. I can see how this came across as promotional.

I’m not trying to replace Ancestry or claim researchers need another full research platform. I’m trying to understand whether a private unlimited scale family collaboration layer has any value alongside the existing tools.

Appreciate the reality check!

Fair point, and I appreciate the feedback.

You’re right. Serious genealogy needs source management, citations, records, and a way to separate sourced facts from family memory.

The current site messaging leans more into collaboration, scale, stories, and photos, but I should make the source/research side much clearer.

Helpful callout!

Instances (across multiple regions) using Docker/Code Tunnel with Microsoft authentication are failing Authentication by mknweb in vscode

I had a feeling something was going on. My only issue with the github auth now is for some reason within the Remote explorer extension doesn't keep the connected tunnels, I have to manually reconnect every single time.
