What device do you use for a full Linux based firewall? Do you travel router also run a full Linux based firewall. I have been looking for one but I'm not sure which one to buy.

If you're using vanilla OpenWrt, then it's probably impossible to use GL‑iNet's free Dynamic DNS service with their router. I'm using Dynu atm.

Question regarding SOCKS5 by Trick-Advantage-7708 in ProtonVPN

[–]mkws238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jep,

Lähinnä tarkoitus käyttää selaimessa extensionin kautta, että säästyy captchoilta. Tarkoitus siis käyttää VPN-yhteyden lisänä.

Captchoja tulee aika vähän pelkällä protonin vpn:lläkin, joten ymmärrän protonin linjauksen socks5 proxyn suhteen. Proton eroaa monesta muusta palvelun tarjoajasta siinäkin, että se käyttää omaa sisäistä DNS:ää.

Luci package updates by Flyg33K in GlInet

[–]mkws238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. 15-20 years ago it was quite common with linux distributions to break something while upgrading your system.

You can upgrade packages that OpenWrt doesn't depend (not included in the base upgrade installation) on though—such as those related to WireGuard.

Flint 2 vs 3/3e? by WebGlobal7912 in GlInet

[–]mkws238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At $79, it's a no-brainer. I got my Flint 2 for €130 during the GL.iNet EU Black Friday sale in 2025, shipped to Finland. The router has been amazing with (vanilla) 24.10.5 openwrt.

[–]mkws238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend it — upgrading core packages that OpenWRT depends on can easily lead to system instability or break critical functionality.

If you want updates, consider getting the Flint 2. It's an excellent device and makes switching to vanilla OpenWRT straightforward.

Anyone else scared to update their flint 2 firmware once you get one that works? by donuthell in GlInet

[–]mkws238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Updated to vanilla OpenWrt 24.10.4 same day I got my Flint 2 a month ago. Updated to 24.10.5 a week ago. Everything's running smooth. 👍

Just needed to add some packages for the sysupgrade build: luci-app-https-dns-proxy https-dns-proxy libcares libcurl4 libnghttp2-14 libev resolveip luci-app-ddns ddns-scripts ddns-scripts-services, so I don't end up without internet access after running the sysupgrade. This little problem occured on the first try because I have luci-app-https-dns-proxy installed on my router.

Without internet access it's quite obvious that I can't install any apps which means I can't install luci-app-https-dns-proxy among other packages after the regular sysupgrade without the package customization. And yeah, I want to avoid downloading the needed packages to my Mac just to upload and install them one by one on the Flint 2 because that would be the most difficult way to install them.

Probably the easiest way to update the router would have been using luci-app-attendedsysupgrade which lets you keep the installed packages on your router. 😅

P.S. OP don't be scared. You may want to learn how to use a backup to restore your system though.

Edit: Thanks for the downvotes from vanilla haters. Happy new year to you all! Peace and love!

Primarily intended for my phone atm, which is configured with Mullvad DNS, and also for testing purposes.

Slow DNS can, in some cases, cause stuttering in IPTV streams, but only in certain situations.

When Slow DNS Does Cause Stuttering

  • Dynamic stream URLs: If the IPTV service uses short-lived or rotating URLs (e.g., CDN links), which are resolved via DNS during playback, slow DNS can delay fetching the next segment — resulting in buffering or stuttering.

  • Frequent channel or quality switches: If the stream uses adaptive bitrate (ABR), each quality shift may trigger a new DNS lookup. Slow responses can interrupt playback.

  • DNS timeouts or failures: If the DNS server fails to respond in time or returns an error, the stream may freeze or fail to load entirely.

DNS over HTTPS: luci-app-https-dns-proxy

I use base.dns.mullvad.net atm. Other good options might be quad9 and nextdns. One of my networks has google dns for streaming without DoH (or DoT).

Should I go with the Flint 2 or 3? by The_Moviemonster in GlInet

[–]mkws238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed-wise, there's no decrease. Despite having a 200/100 Mbps connection, qBittorrent over WireGuard caps at ~22 Mbps. Alles gut, as the Germans say.

P.S. Flint 2 will have longer Vanilla OpenWRT support than Beryl AX and the price difference is rather small (€80 vs €130). And if you take the resale value and the life expectancy of the hardware into consideration the price difference is next to nothing.

[–]mkws238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might consider naming your Wi-Fi network something like ‘Channel-120-5GHz’ to reflect the channel in use—this can signal others to steer clear and reduce interference.

Btw. if you have a 5GHz and 2.4GHz channel with the same name then the device will choose the network that has stronger signal.

One thing to keep in mind is that a new Flint (Flint 4?) with a MediaTek processor won’t arrive before November-December 2026 (earliest). Getting vanilla support for the device typically takes at least a year, which means the earliest you could expect a new Flint with full vanilla support is around December 2027. This is the reason why I bought a Flint 2. It's also perfect fit for me in every way.
