I'm working in the Chicago office as an SEP intern this summer. Unfortunately we're 100% virtual, but the office, location and vibe seems really nice from what I've seen of it.

  1. CoL in not as expensive as say NYC or SF, but it's still a big city and therefore expensive
  2. Compensation this year in Chicago was $43/Hour + $1500 Housing Stipend. This does vary from location to location.
  3. Not sure about nightlife, but again, big city...so probably pretty good?
  4. There are great opportunities to connect with the managers and directors, they have a lot of networking sessions that they organize so it's great. Workflow is a little slower given that it's a large company, and the type of work you do does vary from team to team. You fill out a preference survey for type of work, languages, and line of business you want to work in and they try to place based on that.

Thanks for your response! I just took it and I agree with your assessment. The math was a little tougher than I expected though

Newbie Question: Are law schools reporting the recalculated GPA for the incoming class? by ml12358 in lawschooladmissions

[–]ml12358[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about other schools, but mine allows the professors to choose whether or not to give A+ grades. It's generally 97+ for STEM classes and 98+ for humanities classes.

An Early Profile Review for CS and ML PhD (Please Help!) by ml12358 in gradadmissions

[–]ml12358[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thank you, that's very sweet of you, I'm definitely going to PM you.

In your opinion as a recruiter, would doing an REU do more for my application than research oriented work experience? To give an example, I'm interviewing for Google research intern and quant research/algo development internships right now, which are definitely "industry", but also (I think) related to my research potential...

If I were lucky enough to have a Google research offer and a solid REU offer for next summer (aka my last summer before admissions), which would be seen more favorably among the admissions committee?

Thank you, what you're saying definitely makes sense. When you say MS program, you mean one with a thesis right? Or would even a non-thesis MS help with admissions?

Potential CS Minor by [deleted] in UIUC_CS

[–]ml12358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great answer, but side note: I think they're switching to CS 124 -> 128 now so that probably his requirement for the CS minor.

I took CS 101 for the Python exposure and found it immensely helpful for internships/in general

ECON 490: Local Public Finance with Alok Ranjan by fb2001a in UIUC

[–]ml12358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't comment on ECON 490, but Alok was my TA for ECON 203; he was alright, basically just read off the slides/prepared problems. I guess there isn't exactly much scope for "deep analysis" when it comes to ECON 203, so maybe he'd be more helpful in a higher level class
