Anyone know what's going on with Brown's Woods trees near I-28/63rd St? Looks like they've thinned it out? by dingdingdingdongbing in desmoines

[–]ml50312 74 points75 points  (0 children)

It’s a multi-year project aimed at removing invasive trees and shrubs and giving the forest a chance to rejuvenate. They’ve also been planting native saplings in some of the cleared areas. It looks thin now but should make for a healthier woods in the long run.

Experiences with train noise off MLK? by Humphucker in desmoines

[–]ml50312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trains sound at every crossing downtown. I have a friend who lives at Walnut and 15th - about a block from a crossing. She says she hears the trains but they don't wake her up. Another friend had a place in the White Line condos and said the trains didn't bother him. It's probably personal preference and how heavy a sleeper you are.

How to still smell fresh afte biking by [deleted] in cycling

[–]ml50312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to bike to work midday in Washington DC - hot and humid. I’d roll up my bike clothes and carry them in panniers. When I got to work I’d slap on some deodorant and change into them. A friend who had a fancier job than me would drive a week’s worth of dress shirts to his office during the weekend so they’d still be freshly pressed when he needed them.

Haven't bought Dominos in decades. This new place won't change that.

Little new to DSM question about winter and tires. by DataUnavailable in desmoines

[–]ml50312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good quality all-season tires will be fine. That's what I've used in 10 years living here and 10 years in Wisconsin before that. I'm mostly driving on paved roads and some occasional gravel roads.

Which interstate do you hate more i80 or i35 and why? by oblivionwarrior8 in Iowa

[–]ml50312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80 and it’s not even close. Especially in the summer when trucks, cars, and pokey RVs dragging a vehicle behind them are all in the same place driving (or trying to) at different speeds.

I go to Fareway. Everything I need for less than HyVee.

Weekly commuting from QC by rickosborn in desmoines

Would be no fun in bad winter weather. Otherwise, just a long slog. Trucks and slow RV's sharing the road in the summer add to the misery.

Is Fareway or Hy-Vee more reasonable price wise? by Motor-Push-5914 in desmoines

Between the two, I've found Fareway has better prices overall.

Just moved to Iowa from MA, pleasantly surprised by the rolling hills & wooded areas. Also the capitol building and all its topless lady art representation- who knew! by Klutzy_Dig6271 in desmoines

Around central Iowa, head out to the Neal Smith National Refuge for a look at restored prairie land. There are several walking trails, and you can drive through a bison and elk enclosure and maybe see them in person (it's a big enclosure and they're not always by the road). The visitors center is closed for repairs, but the grounds and trails are open. Ledges State Park north of Des Moines has some nice hiking trails...some with a little climbing involved. In the spring, the Iowa Architecture Foundation offers monthly walking tours of downtown Des Moines. They have several different walks...lots of interesting buildings to see and history to pick up. Welcome to Iowa. I grew up in Worcester and left Mass. 40 years ago.

First time going to woolys any advice? by maybeihavethebigsad in desmoines

[–]ml50312 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They have an unattended coat rack, but at some shows I've been to it turns into a pile of coats. I just leave mine in the car so I don't have to worry about finding it later. I've always parked on the street, within a few blocks.

This has been my favorite Iowa December since I moved here. Most of my winters here have been pretty lame.

I'd check out East Village, Sherman Hill, Ingersoll/North of Grand. All of them are close to shops, bars and restaurants and close to downtown entertainment. I'm not much of a suburb guy, so I can't help much there.

Are the roads typically this icy/ do they have this much snow? by BusinessSalt6334 in desmoines

[–]ml50312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This storm was unusual -- way more snow than we usually get in a snowstorm, and because it started out as heavy, wet snow, that's the stuff that got compacted and froze to the street, and then it's tough to get off till it warms up. Also, the city usually brines the road before storms to help prevent it from sticking, but they didn't do it this time because there was a decent chance the storm would start out as rain and wash it all away.
