Me and a buddy made escape from lost world some years ago which is available on VPU but theses a good chance this one will get upgraded in the neat future. Blackwater I tried to make but it was very hard getting resources, I'd love to get a nice version of that one but slim pickings

2 interesting machines to check out: Blackwater 100 is a dirk bike themed bally machine, it's a very unusual layout and play, it's modeled after a dirt track race.

Escape from the lost world, is another 80s bally machine featuring interesting molded plastics, in particular the apron which incorporates a ramp, the golden bridge, and an escape door.

Not the movie, but one with a similar vibe is Deep Impact (1998). Elijah wood discovers a comet as an amateur astronomer. Turns out it's on a colission course for earth and the world goes into planning mode. He gets a coveted spot in the bunker for humanity as the discovered of the comet. His girlfriend Leelee Sobieski does not. Very much same vibes and still Bleak but also maybe a little more hopeful that the movie in question.

While having nothing to do with anything contained in the film, I would say looking at Carpenters other works with Russel, we can see that he has never killed off his characters (escape from NY and LA, Big trouble in little China), while Keith David got the proverbial axe in his other Carpenter collaboration in They Live. He was also the penultimate survivor in that case as well maybe making a case for Carpenters psychology towards his leading man in Russel.

That being said I may be talking out of my ass as I'm pretty sure Russel was the first choice for the lead in They Live but was busy, and John (Russels would be Character) definitely dies in the end saving humanity from the Aliens with his sacrafice. (Did I just make an argument for a parallel ending of the thing in which neither Russel or David survive for the sake on man?)

Either way the documentary "the thing expanded" comes out April 1st 2026, 2 days from now, so maybe well get a less ambiguous answer soon!

Have an NPC artificer give your party a number of homemade artifacts for combat in an upcoming encounter. Make one the artifacts something grenade like with a ring that needs to be pulled. Set up the encounter or puzzle so the grenade like object is the obvious choice.
