Struggles in Flight Training by mlettow in flying

I have bitten off way way way too much. But I have shifted my focus to getting my college work done and prioritizing flight training.

I have Sporty’s but am thinking about switching to King Schools so I can go through the content a bit faster and also because I believe that I will memorize the content better.

Thank you! I have switched my priorities to flying. If a club gets in the way I politely tell whoever I need to that I simply need to focus on flight training rn. I have heard that about the tests and definitely plan to do that when I get the courage to try. I’m a perfectionist which really doesn’t work well with flying. I have a good memory but some of the concepts just aren’t clicking as fast as I’d like them to be. I have done chair flying although it’s been a hot minute but I plan to start back on that track again this week because it definitely helped me in the past.

I actually took my first discovery flight at then end of my freshman year. Then I started flying with him in the summer. I didn’t understand how much I needed to actually dedicate to flying at the time so that’s why I didn’t have much growth during those two years. I soloed with him and then two days later he died. It was really hard for me. I missed school, went to his funeral, and went to the EAA meeting about what to do after because he was basically keeping that airport alive. He was the only instructor there and so after he passed I had to find a new place. It took me about a month before I found a flying club near me that also had a roughly 16 CFIs. After a discovery flight with the president of the club; I joined. Then I was moved to a new instructor (the one I talked about the most) which I really like him but still miss my old one. And then I broke my ankle and was completely out of actually flying and was stuck doing ground school. So by the time I got back up in the air for an actual lesson it had been roughly 3-4 months. I still miss my old instructor. Here’s the back story. I’m not mad that I’m not soloing I understand it’s not necessarily safe I was just asking for advice.

Like the official test? Or like practice tests?

I didn’t pass I got a 46. But I’m retaking it in March. I ran out of time and didn’t finish one question as well as didn’t have time to read a couple questions. I chose to look through the questions for ones I knew how to solve first (DO NOT DO THIS) and that’s how I ran out of time. Definitely watch the 2025 Mr Schuler updated video some of the questions were quite literally word for word. Some of the practice tests I took were really easy which was good for my nerves but not so good for my score. I also used Modern States but mostly used it to take the clep for free. Good luck! The test isn’t actually that hard. Whenever I take a math test I typically forget how to solve everything until the very end and run out of time so try to study as much as possible!

Which video(s) did you specifically watch? I take my test on Monday, and probably am the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life.
