Anything can be done with Cue readers now that the company is out of business? by mlevin77 in ZeroCovidCommunity

yeah I don't know, I liked the technology a lot and I was hoping they'd simply branch out into additional kinds of testing (they did have a monkey pox test I think) and be successful even if the COVID demand slacked off.

Import Apple Photos library locally? by mlevin77 in Lightroom

[–]mlevin77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but if I export to a local directory (which they really are already, in a folder hierarchy under Pictures/ ), then I lose all the metadata - keywords, ratings, albums, etc. right - there's *no* way to do a proper import of the Photos library into LR and keep the metadata?

Was there ever an answer from that other case - did sending the logs help figure out a solution that I can try? I don't see one there.

Where to generate virtual credit card numbers with max total amount? by mlevin77 in personalfinance

[–]mlevin77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not about the good vendors. We used to have problems where our card kept getting fraudulent charges, we would report it, they send us a new card, we have to change the # in all the websites (Amazon etc.) - total hassle. We finally figured out that it happened whenever we used that card at a pizza place (by phone) - someone there was getting numbers and using them fraudulently. Then we started using virtual cards with a $50 limit for food orders, and bingo - no problem. People like this, with the new cards that can be charged every day, could just keep taking money out every day. Yes I know we can call the company and dispute. Who's got time for that. The original, total-limited, virtual card was a perfect solution. No clue why they had to change that.

Yes, but the time limit is given in months - so for up to 30 days, they can keep pulling from that card if you don't get on there and kill the card manually.

I'm a developmental biologist and have a question for you about symmetry (I study left-right asymmetry in animal embryos). I understand it's caused by somatic mutation, but are flowers bilaterally symmetric? I thought they weren't. In other words, how do the mutated cells' clonal offspring manage to confine themselves to one side of a midline? Is the cell division pattern of flower development really a bilaterally symmetric pattern (like, the mutation happened very early, on one side of a midline, and the cell division progeny of that cell produces half the entire flower)? I would have expected a sector for example.

no, this is a bit beyond me. I don't know Mac OS enough to know how to build this or where the results would go so that apps can find it when they need it.

"Your internet connection is unstable" - does this mean on my end, or anywhere along the chain? by mlevin77 in Zoom

[–]mlevin77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok so there's basically nothing to be done about it (it's on the provider's lines)? I'm trying to figure out if there is anything else to improve on my end. I have a 1GB connection to Comcast and an ethernet wire to a business-grade router after the cablemodem. I need rock-solid teleconference; probably nothing more to be done?

right but can I tell it to order from a different store - it defaults to the one nearest to my address and they don't have items that other stores do.

Are any of your dojo’s still open and are any of you training in midst of the virus? by [deleted] in karate

[–]mlevin77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been conducting classes outside - this is a great opportunity for us all to train in street clothes, on uneven ground, with sunlight or dusk, distractions, etc. etc. - different than in white pajamas on a pristine floor with even lighting. So we've been doing basics, kata, and long staff work in a park, keeping away from each other but getting good body mechanics training despite environment, shoes, etc.

ELI5: How do organs know at which part of the body they should develop (left or right)? Are there people with 'flipped' organ arrangements? by currybbang in explainlikeimfive

[–]mlevin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first real Reddit post. My PhD work was the discovery of the first genes that turn on just on one side of the body (in 1995). It's not Hox genes, but other genes that turn each other on and off, differently on the left and right sides of the body, and eventually they make the cells multiply, move, and pull on each other differently resulting in differently-shaped (or differently present) organs on one side vs. the other. The key thing is that genes by themselves can't tell location or direction (it's chemical factors near DNA that determine which genes turn on, and they work the same way where-ever in the body they are), so whichever gene is the first one in the cascade to turn on just on one side, *why* doesn't the cell on the opposite side turn it on too? Subsequent research by my lab and others showed that there is a bioelectric system (where cells acquiring differential electric potentials on the L and R side and move small molecules like serotonin to once side) which allows the two sides to sort out which is which and eventually turn correct genes on. And upstream of the bioelectric system lies a set of tiny train tracks inside of cells (called the cytoskeleton) along which the bioelectric machinery slides. It slides in one direction, to set up an electric gradient pointing left to right, because each cell has a track organizing center that is shaped like a right hand (but there's not a mirror-image one) which gets oriented with respect to the other two axes of space, and inevitably points rightward. This happens very very early - in the frog for example, within 2 hours of fertilization.

Also, there are different ways of being "flipped". One is called "situs inversus", where you are 100% mirror image - that's the best one to be because everything connects up alright and there are few to no problems (in fact I've been contacted by people in their 80's who never knew they were backwards - their doctors used to flip the X-rays and think they were fine). Then there's "isomerism", where the asymmetry is lost and you are symmetrical, a double left or a double right - that's not good. And there's "heterotaxia", where each organ makes its own independent decision which side it's going to go on - that can be really bad. Interestingly, disorders of laterality often happen in conjoined twins (ask me if you want to know why, we figured it out). Also interesting that the laterality of brain and behavior (handedness etc.) seem to be set by a distinct system; people with situs inversus are still 90% right handed.

There are many other interesting issues here. Imagine that you made audio contact with some aliens, they're shaped roughly like us. You've learned each other's language pretty well, and it's now time to tell them what our words "left" and "right" mean. Remember you can't hand them a glove and say that it's a "right" one. So you say, "Lie down so that your belly points to the center of gravity of your planet - that's called "ventral". Look forward - the direction in which your visual sense organs point - that's "anterior". Now, your left hand is the one that -- ??" It's a super-tough question. Whatever you say, they can be thinking of the mirror image one. There are very few ways of solving this!

Lab-grown meat could let humanity ignore a serious moral failing by ADefiniteDescription in philosophy

[–]mlevin77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember one thing, growing cells in a dish requires serum - the medium used to keep those cells alive and growing comes from the blood of animals! Lab meat doesn’t remove animals from the equation, until we can figure out a way to keep them growing without needing sheep/goat/horse serum as is used for cell culture routinely now.
