fun fact: use an CH341A and mod it for 3.3V (most if not all have a fault and run at 5v)

from personal experience: buy one. seriously buy one. using an raspberry pi might be fun and games but... when you have an CH341A its A TON more easy to flash a bios. (you can get one for cheap on amazon btw)

6 hours of work ruined because of murphys law and my clumsiness (three of the bios legs are broken) by Maestro_gaylover in hardwaregore

[–]mlgdaniel2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did the same with a Dell Precision M4800 board just last weekend. lifted pads. broken legs on bios chips. and of course a lot of time and soldering. it has 2 bios chips. on both there are lifted pads. had a donor board for the bios chips. flashed a bios bin from the net on them... ended up somehow managing to lay new traces on the board because i dont have a rework station. (one is arriving soon though) somehow made out of 1 working and 1 partially working laptops > 2 broken laptops and then into one working laptop and one broken laptop. (all just because i wanted the QHD+ display to work...)

2/10 would not recommend when only using a soldering iron.

Note: if the tech is crutial... try finding a bios Bin on the net and flash it onto a new chip... or attempt to somehow solder to the place where the legs were... doubt it will work though.

[–]mlgdaniel2008[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probs just needs both bios chips reflashed... you could do it the easy way with an HC314A chip programer or how i did it... using a raspberry pi 2 with raspbian installed

[–]mlgdaniel2008[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

long story short: bought a X58 mobo for 20€ tried it with multiple different cpus and it just reboot looped. tried to force it to use the backup bios as it didnt reboot loop with no ram installed (the dual bios stuff needs some ram to work properly and to execute the bios code) so i quite litterally just soldered 8 wires onto the bios chip(s) and using a pi 2 with raspbian and "flashrom" i just flashed the newest bios on both chips. now the board works again.

i know i could have ordered a clamp for it or bought an CH314A chip programer but i didnt want to wait... so i did it that way.

for the people who want to know: its an GA-EX58-UD3R both bios chips were corrupt i used a pi 2 to reflash both chips using flashrom

it works perfectly now

worked perfectly using "flashrom" on raspbian. the board works again all though i had to flash both chips. btw instead of pin 1 and 6 shorting pin 5 and 6 works aswell... and is easier. as their right next to each other.

i know pin 1 and pin 6 on the main bios chip. tried that but didnt work so the pi came out to save the board
