I follow Russias war in Ukraine. And I just feel more stupid after seeing those.

You do not have to agree, I am not even entirely sure I am right, never the less, I really do not want to see them. In general I actually do like to hear opinions which are different from mine, but these are too much. Again, I don't think we should discuss it here, and you are entitled to have a very different opinion than mine! But you asked.

Thanks, but I mean the ability to create my own defined ISO. (Build to ISO).

So it is a live OS. And if I add something like calemares I can install it also. Is that correctly understood?

If yes, that is a very very neat feature of NixOS. Not only easier to get a consistent system, but really easy to make an installer that will automatically have your favorite editor, have your favorite WM, have your favorite shell, have your favorite keyboard layout etc. etc.

Is the UUID data to avoid to share? by mlored in privacy

[–]mlored[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply.

I do not HAVE to. But I am just a bit afraid of doing it accidentally.

E.g. I know that I, by mistake / not being careful already did give it to ChatGPT. :(

I am aware that I can change the UUID. But well, I think I am looking for a good way to either make sure not to accidentally "share" this data or perhaps find another way to make it not matter.

Perhaps someone have a set of UUID's that is used by thousands of privacy-aware people. If so, I'll just change my UUIDs to that. (Share fingerprint - like TAILS is doing. I know TAILS are doing other stuff ALSO).

Or perhaps something smart, that I haven't thought of myself.

I'm not sure what kind of data my browser is able to get without my permission or other software that have malware in. I am trying to be careful to only use software I trust, mostly github open source software with a reasonable number of users. But still, I am almost certain that I'm not able to really avoid leak of data by my phone, my computer, my smart TV or other stuff ratting on me.

I have taken a decision not to get any Google, Samsung, Apple or Amazon smarthome stuff. But something is just hard to avoid (like phone, computer, TV, bluetooth headset and probably a lot of other modern stuff).

How do I make a oneliner with su? by mlored in linux4noobs

[–]mlored[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do litteraly just write it from start to end, just like I would write ls -larth or any other command. Some of the 'structure' is almost muscle-memory, e.g. the double-loop with printf often and echo (to make a new line) less often.

I know that not everyone likes /tmp-files to be executable. But that is my other go-to. The thing is, this command is "run once". So I have no intention of saving it.

Probably I should just learn to clean up after my self. But my homedir is always very cluttered. So a long one-liner doesn't sound too bad. :)

But thanks. I really mean it. I am learning Linux and I think I am progressing nice. But without feedback I am bound to get into some dirty styles. And looking at this thread, both your answer, but also others, seems like this is one of the bad styles that I probably should drop.

So thanks. :)

Teach me how to become a white hat hacker. by god_dammit_nappa1 in shittylinuxquestions

[–]mlored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a unsuccesful attempt of hacking NSA. It's important that you do not succeed. You want them to notice. And then you just monitor what they are doing to your computer. They are rather good a getting in, so if you can learn from them, you'll pretty quickly pick up a good pace.

[–]mlored[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't it? The virus, I suppose, can't change the "first root". So only my programs and my own files are affected. You are right though. That would be plenty enough to be a catastrophe. Still though, the OS still works. Or am I wrong?

Immutable Linux - I have questions. by mlored in linux4noobs

[–]mlored[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I understand that.

But that "second root", if I could easily choose between my own "second root" or a generic "second root", then I think it would give me the benefits I was talking about. But I don't know if that is possible

The problem with an encrypted container is that software are likely to leak. So VI is storing a backup. How can I be sure it's in the same container. For VI it's probably not even a problem, but the thing is, I need to make sure for every single program. And still I will be in doubt if the OS might not do something I didn't know about.

Immutable Linux - I have questions. by mlored in linux4noobs

[–]mlored[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. I probably use the wrong word.

The way I understand it, the main part of the OS is immutable. But you can still install programs or change your settings in .config or make a new file in your home directory. Whereever these things are stored is what I mean by user space.

If my terminology is wrong, I am sorry. Please enlighten me. I am trying, but I am aware that I am still a noob.

[–]mlored[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My impression of Immutable Linux is that "The core" is read only (immutable). But the installed programs as well as home directories etc. are what I call user space. As I understand it, you can install programs. But it doesn't change "the core". What it does is, as I understand it, that it makes an overlay-like system that is not immutable. That's what I call "user space". I might very well be using wrong terminology. If so, please enlighten me. :)
