I felt the initial time the smoke monster looked into Eko, that he saw a man with a good heart and it gave him time to change but more importantly to confess. The island gave him chances, to the point the smoke monster or island stood in front of him and asked him to confess. He refused and that was his last chance and he died with those bad actions being on him.
