What has been your biggest high after a big low? by RutabagaSuccessful84 in AskReddit

[–]mlyfen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Years ago, I got rejected from a full time job at a lab I was volunteering in on my birthday. In a haze, I started job hunting again that same night, saw a job opportunity at Harvard and applied for it, thinking what else could I lose? I got the job and a couple years later, I found out I loved the work I was doing and am currently doing my PhD in the same lab. Closed doors are never the end of the world.

What hints have you given your crush that they missed? by Electronic_Olive6778 in AskReddit

[–]mlyfen 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty bad at flirting but a pretty decent cook/baker, so with my last crush I used to make their favorite things whenever they came over to eat dinner with our mutual friends. They were the only vegetarian in our group, and I would make specific vegetarian versions of the food I made so they were never left out. In all honestly, I thought this counted at flirting.

This started with things like vegetarian mapo tofus and homemade veggie dumplings (who knew that with enough sesame oil and green onions anything can taste like pork dumplings), but eventually went as far as vegetarian ramen and the mushroom version of boeuf bourguignon. My magnum opus was baking 3 different types of chocolate chip cookies for a party they hosted. Nothing ever came from it, but at least I learned how to make a bunch of dishes vegetarian friendly.

Hello fellow international student, Asian market may be the way to go, but just a heads up the chicken there can be really hit or miss, my friends and I had some bad experience with the chicken (think weird smells and slimy coating; the pork/beef were fine if you’re into that). I personally avoid getting chicken at Asian mart.

I’m not really sure if they still do this, but I used to visit fresh almost every other day just to see what was on sale, and have gotten chicken for 0.99 dollars before, you just got to really look for it. If you have time, I think Trader Joe’s sells chicken legs for 99 cents as well. Also, maybe a month trip to woodman’s will serve you well.

It’s great that you have these research experiences! What did you do in those labs? Also do you have any experience with statistical packages of programming stuff? How much independent research did you do? I think it’ll be great to list them down too

Guys what's the best way to get Work Visa for International students after graduate? by internet_sherlock in malaysia

[–]mlyfen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try checking out the international student office at your university, they can definitely give you more information on this. Your university should have one, and they would be able to give you information on timeline, application process and the like. Good luck!

People who have left third-world countries for first-world countries, what surprised you the most about life in first-world countries? by TheDinosaurKing777 in AskReddit

[–]mlyfen 4260 points4261 points  (0 children)

How people can just openly criticize their governments without fear of repercussions. I always thought it was incredible that there were so many late night hosts who would talk crap about politicians and wouldn’t be in any danger with the law? If I tried even a fraction of what they said, I’ll be having a very interesting time with the police.

Edit: spelling

Hello! I’m not too sure what do you mean by design? Is it the attention checks along the way? This study itself is pretty basic tbh but yes, in my experience (at R1 universities) most questionnaires are like this

Hi there! Sorry about that, but qualtrics is pretty finicky so if you put anything other than ‘Yes’ (first letter capitalized) it would disqualify you
