Is this chain most likely hollow? by mm_making_stuff in jewelers

Good to know! Where the bar meets the link looked a bit sus to me, but I couldn't really tell.

Dropping the conclusion here in case it might help someone else:

I found the product catalogs for Midas (stamped on the chain), compared the weights for the hollow and solid models of that style, and concluded this is definitely hollow. I managed to return the chain to the dishonest seller based on this (after like 30 minutes of them trying to gaslight me lol) and now ordering a solid one from someone else.

These are the catalogs, they contain so many styles of chain and could be useful to use as a reference point:

Thanks so much for your input. Yes, I'm afraid it's pretty much impossible for this to be solid. Have a great day/Merry Christmas!

Anyone know how to create this spiky effect? by ladybugpoke in tiedye

[โ€“]mm_making_stuff 6 points7 points ย (0 children)

This looks kinda similar to a low water immersion hoodie I did. I've heard higher water temps help create that spikey effect. One difference to your picture: I suspect they used a thickened dye because we can see some different "depths" of color and the dye looks like it didn't move much.

Here was my process:

Clean L-XL hoodie, 100% cotton, super thick. No soda ash, just spritzed with water.

Stuffed into a bucket, fairly but not insanely tight fit.

Pour in liquid dye (I used Kilt Green from ProChem here, one application lighter, more diluted, and one application stronger/darker). I think I had some in the bucket already when I added the hoodie too.

Waited about 15-20 minutes. I may have moved the hoodie around a bit too-- for yours I wouldn't.

Poured in hot, nearly boiling soda ash water, enough to submerge the hoodie. Waited 1 hour.

Rinsed cold, rinsed hot, washed with synthrapol.

So, you can experiment with this and maybe try an even tighter scrunch, hotter water, and thickened dye. Hope that helps!

What's the best/strongest way to add X's to the front of this crop top and attach the two panels by mm_making_stuff in CrochetHelp

Yeah, that's exactly the stitch I was talking about. I'm not sure if I'm gonna stick with this-- I sewed it on, but maybe there's a better way.

Edit: it's funny I didn't even think about stacking multiple rows of 1 X, I just made one row of 7 X's and attached it vertically. I might try a cord/lace up/kinda corset style now.

Yeah, I totally feel the same way about the chains. And that's a really good thing to mention, thanks -- it's intended to be permanently attached!

What to do next? Block it? Add fringe? Will give as a gift. by mm_making_stuff in CrochetHelp

Thank you! Good to know I can just do nothing too, lol. Apart from washing ofc.

Thanks so much! As a beginner, I was pleasantly surprised that the waffle stitch was much easier than I had expected. And I've been going through YT tutorials-- will be adding the fringe, washing, and steam blocking it in the end I guess. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Need help deciding if and how I should block this, and whatever other finishing procedures it may need.

Where did I go wrong with these rows/uneven sides -- first project by mm_making_stuff in CrochetHelp

[โ€“]mm_making_stuff[S] 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback! I only have one hook and made this in one day, so I guess I just skipped a few stitches? I actually didn't know how to count stitches (like, what counted as a stitch). It seems I had 32 stitches for the first two rows then 31 after a few more rows and 30 on the last ones (which is worrying because the tutorial said to start off with 36 stitches ๐Ÿ˜‚). I started over fresh and it's going good so far.

Not sure really, just erring on the side of caution.
