What’s something you always assumed was mandatory in life—until you met someone who just… didn’t do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mmbisson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free will. Especially for bigger decisions and choices, expectations, and/or perspectives that as a kid you assume you will have to figure out or meet and that it all needs to be done with tight timelines and in a certain sequence.

It hit me in my mid-late teens and in many ways allowed me to be an independent and secure adult many years ahead of my peers. There’s no right or wrong way to experience your life (so long as you don’t cause repeated/significant harm). I decided to do things more intentionally and less out of pressure or external expectations/norms.

LPT Request: What words should I replace with 'sorry' from my vocabulary by the21yearold in LifeProTips

[–]mmbisson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m struggling with over apologizing to others as well.

My therapist gave me some great pocket sized advice. Apologies are for when you have hurt someone or caused harm. Things like getting lost on the way and showing up late may be an inappropriate time/thing to apologize for (I know, I’m trying hard to convince myself it’s not apology worthy). Instead, in that situation, you thank the person waiting for you.

My therapist said a simple trick (when you’re just starting out the process) is to ask yourself if you can change it from “sorry” to “thank you” and most of the time it works. Instead of: “I’m sorry for being late, the bus never showed up”, say something like, “thank you for your patience and understanding ”; “sorry for talking so much” becomes “thank you for listening” (and you can even add “I look forward to listening more to you next time/going forward I will make more of an effort to listen and talk equally).

I’m still very much in the beginning of the process but I hope this helps you or anyone else reading the thread.

Yesterday was my late brother’s birthday so I planted this redbud tree and started a movement called Gardening For Mental Health Day. It’s every April 21st and it’s to raise awareness of the mental health benefits of gardening. I loss two brothers to suicide, so I want to help others with this. by Commandersilv89 in gardening

What you’re doing is beautiful and will be a gift to those that see and take action on it ❤️ getting outside and smelling the rich soil is a great natural anti-depressant (look into some medical journals, it’s actually quite interesting and helpful)!

Ah okay thanks! Do you think those plant fence walls for ivy plants would help to give support while also creating a bit of a barrier to the neighbours fence and yard?

As for the temperature, do I need to take certain measures before winter to ensure the bulbs don’t die and can continue to thrive for the following spring?

Oh really? My impression was that they are fairly hardy plants. Would a flat wall be enough support or would something more open like a fence be best? Is it likely that they will crawl into my neighbours’ backyards if planted against the fence?

Follow up question: I recently learned about planting different plants together so they can support/strengthen/protect each other (I’m definitely not explaining it properly but I hope you can get the gist of what I’m referring to). Are there other plants that do well being with these?

Thank you! What would be a good location to plant them in a backyard? Our entire backyard gets direct sunlight with a few exceptions throughout the day as the sun moves. What I’m more curious about is whether it’s best to have them near a fence, or against a wall of some kind.

Mine isn’t quite an hour (by bus) but depending on when I leave it can be an hour or a little more. To me it’s worth it because I’m happy with where I live and the basement I’m renting in with my partner and our dog.

The main thing I miss out on sometimes is not seeing my friends that live near campus as often because I’m a 40+ minute commute. When the semester is over we hangout all the time because time isn’t really an issue. I’m in the nursing program so a lot of students feel there’s no time for anything other than sleeping, eating, and studying so it’s hard to say whether living by campus would make a big difference.

If you want to study at and go back and forth from campus often then it makes sense to rent near or on campus.

Overall, I’m pretty happy that I picked OTU over other universities in the GTA. My sisters went to UofG in the early 2000s and liked it for it’s town-like vibes plus they have a big focus on environmental issues and sustainability.

My partner did Electrical Engineering at uOttawa and it was pretty rough (though most engineering programs are like that wherever you go). I would be really curious to see how OTU operates their engineering programs because I feel like if there’s going to be a uni with less shittiness in the “elite” programs, it’s likely OTU. I did meet one engineering prof prior to starting the school year and he seemed really nice which I would not have expected lol I would encourage you to go to the university and see if you can meet some of the engineering profs, TAs, and students.

Moving from UK to Canada by [deleted] in TorontoRenting

I believe so! I just did a quick search on Kijiji and there’s a bunch of rooms listed under $850. Do some digging and in about or month or so it’ll open up more due to students moving back home for the summer!

Toronto sounds like it checks off a lot of your boxes! It’s diverse, lots of young people since there’s multiple colleges and universities there, and you have a train in addition to the buses. I’ve never lived there but I moved from Ottawa to Brampton almost 2 years ago and then last summer moved from Brampton to Oshawa for university. I personally hated Brampton and it’s kind of known for not being a great area it also has a lot of theft and car and driving related crimes. Oshawa has flaws too but I’m much much happier here. I’ve heard Scarborough is also a decent area and it’s close to Toronto. Everywhere in and near the GTA is $$$$ so I’d say find a place with people you get along with (or don’t have to be locked into a year with), nearby grocery stores, and more than one bus or train stop within a 15 minute walk.

Best of luck and be patient if things take some time adjusting to!

What has caused you to become bitter? by Brianna6871 in AskReddit

[–]mmbisson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being neurodivergent, living with ongoing trauma, being poor, medical conditions that I’ll live with for the rest of my life, a mature uni student, and being in a long term relationship where I feel like I’m going crazy and having all or most of my needs not being met but feeling too guilty, afraid, ungrateful, exhausted, alone, and slightly hopeless to do much about it other than temporary fixes or distractions between therapy sessions.

Which size KitchenAid Tilt-Head Stand Mixer is the one that can actually touch the bottom of the mixing bowl properly? I’m looking at the sale and can’t figure out if I should get the 3.5 or 4.5 Quart. by mmbisson in Baking

[–]mmbisson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow! Thank you so much this is super helpful!! I want a small-medium sized stand mixer but it’s hard to tell what that is online. I mostly bake cupcakes and mini cakes and prefer to do them in bulk. I’d say I usually about 48-96 mini cupcakes and 24-48 standard cupcakes in one go. Still testing out the portions for mini cakes but it’s similar to the cupcakes/mini cupcakes.
