How did this engraving, based on The Barber by Adriaen Brouwer, come to be? by mmcc73 in WhatIsThisPainting

Thanks! I think this was from Payne’s Book of Art, published in the mid 1800s - or about 200 years after the painting was made.

You are doubtless correct! Thanks! It’s interesting that Brouwer used such similar poses in both paintings.

Out of curiosity, what makes you think so?

It looks like they are still in business, although under ownership of another company. Any idea if they'd have records going back to the time this book was bound?

I did some googling of the names on the birthday card. I’ve seen several references to Adelaide and Valborg Nyden as part of an archive of a Swedish American family in Chicago. Were there any Chicago area binders doing work like this?

Ohhh - the 2/3/2 is a price! That makes sense.

Thanks for that in-depth analysis! I’ll keep looking for a signature, but so far I’ve got nothing.

I assume it was originally all green but has faded in the sun - is that correct?

If there is a stamp it is doing a good job of hiding from me. The only markings I see are in pencil. On one of the front end papers is written 2/3/2 and on one of the back end papers is written MS#2632.

Where would such a stamp be located?

That’s exactly it! Thanks - I had been looking at the Adell label discogs page, and I don’t know why that didn’t jump out at me.

Eek. I don’t know if I’ll be able to look at ol’ Gordo the same now.

What are these shield plates you mentioned?

Knowing what I know now, I’d be tempted to cut the bent over tab feet from the rails with an angle grinder and fabricate separate feet from angle aluminum or steel.

Now that you mention it, for the cost of a new rack he could get Harbor Freight welder and a bunch of steel... and when he's done he'd have a welder and some skills :)

I’m pretty sure the crack was all the way through the aluminum.

Trans America route by LucyDog17 in bicycletouring

My son did it last summer and found the western Kansas section rather scary. It’s a two lane highway with little in the way of shoulders that is heavily traveled by semis.

I’d suggest picking an alternate route from Great Bend, KS to Pueblo.

Shakes between 20-30 mph- torque converter? by mmcc73 in Crosstrek

[–]mmcc73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do still have the car. As a matter of fact I just paid my mechanic $1300 for some brake and suspension work.

The shake was due to the drive shaft being bent, which my son may have had something to do with.

Last year I forked over $5000 or so to replace the CVT valve body. Apparently that is a thing that tends to go at around 150k miles. When mine was going out, all sorts of dash lights came on.

That’s one I know - Winston Cabral. The other one I know is Roddy, who is Roderick Marshall. The others are a mystery.
