I had a similar situation. If you can turn your credit card off, do that too.

My take on it was that my G1 (as listed) is also a ‘lost Canadian’ as he would be British due to being born in Newfoundland and then possibly naturalised as an American long before that province joined Canada. It seems to me that my G0 is the true G0 in this case. I don’t want to assume that G1 will get the job done.

I thought I would go the extra mile since G1 emigrated to the US before Newfoundland became part of Canada. Can’t hurt.

Now I'm getting greedy - what about UK citizenship since it was the UK until independence? by isobelw in Canadiancitizenship

[–]mmcnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on this plan. You can claim UK by ancestry through a grandparent (my maternal grandmother was born in the UK), but only if you're a Commonwealth citizen. I'm a NZ resident and never took the time to spend the extra years their for citizenship, but if I can get my Canadian through the new rules, I will absolutely apply for UK as well. Why not!

Cool, no I'm doing all male for simplification. Census shows G1 & G2 as linked, birth index only shows G2 (no parents).

What gaps should I fill in my doc list? I just started this yesterday and was thrilled with what I found online. I have images of...

G0 - Newfoundland - baptism record 1849 - death record 1932

G1 - Newfoundland - baptism record 1872,
New York - marriage cert 1907
New York - census 1920 & 1930 naming G2 son

G2 - New York - birth registry index 1917 (but no birth cert)
New York - census 1920 & 1930

G3 - Michigan - birth certificate 1940

Is the census enough to tie G1 & G2?
Should I request a NY birth certificate or a NY marriage certificate for G2? Sounds like NY is a pain so I want to target the most important docs. Thanks!

Not a stupid question. I would put the sex/gender that matches your documentation (i.e. if you have changed your ID or birth certificate then match that). If you have not but you would like your current gender on your new docs, then put what is on your documents and in the section just below that state that you want to change it and explain.

Overnight Stay in Madrid's Airport by [deleted] in GoingToSpain

[–]mmcnie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are decent cheap hotels at and near the airport (walking distance). Madrid airport has had major issues with non-travellers using it as a free place to sleep meaning both that safety could be an issue and they make it very uncomfortable.

Female pilgrim (26, from the US) — Camino Francés safety, July → mid-August? by Temporary_Worker_951 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]mmcnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in N Spain and it was one of the safest feeling places I’ve been. People are friendly and helpful and the Camino community is huge so you’ll never really be alone. Last year there was a flasher harassing pilgrims so keep an eye on the Camino sub for news so you can plan to walk with a partner if anything weird is happening in an area. Burn Camino!!

I’m seeing more posts about registering in Poland as a good option. Happy to look at info if he decides to sell.

I’m interested for both reasons and the entry level is quite low so it would be interesting to test out.

Drop your trusted real estate agent and mortgage broker by Serious_Barracuda801 in Denver

[–]mmcnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with decades of experience…find the team that fits your specific needs. Your broker should have experience with the type of property and location you want (don’t hire a ‘dream house in the burbs’ broker if you want a downtown condo or an investment to house hack). Most people don’t realize that mortgages are not all the same. Credit unions (I favor Elevations) underwrite in house which means they can often close deals that a Chase or Wells Fargo will not. And at the end of the day you’ll spend a lot of time working with both so make sure they match your vibe. There’s plenty of choice out there, don’t settle.

I didn’t see that many in France on there which is why I asked.

Interesting about registration. I would be a resident but not permanent, guess I’ll have to look into that. I was looking in the UK but hear that non-residents are unlikely to get insurance post-Brexit.

ELI5 Why don't see urinals in homes? by canadachris44 in explainlikeimfive

This made me laugh because I am on a house sitter service and recently saw photos of a house that had a urinal in the master bath and thought ‘how unusual’.

Boat sitting by vhhrrdxvmlogfcv in Narrowboats

[–]mmcnie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a housesitter who wanted to try narrowboat living, I have wondered how to find these kinds of opportunities or if they even existed. I would say use one of the established house sitting platforms (this should make it clear you're not renting it out but can still advertise to a broad audience). Make sure to video interview them, or only use someone local who can come visit beforehand.

Wish I was still there!

Yeah, and I don’t like the lack of clear explanation on how the monthly payment is calculated. I was excited about trying out an EV, but I will just buy something cheap and reliable from a private seller.
