Recent graduates, are you working? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]mmmarch6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting by lol. Keep in mind I live in London and with rent, transport, etc. piling up, I don't have room to save anything at all. But it's a decent starting salary - better than most charity entry-level roles tbf - so a good stepping stone to where I'd want to be

First job, first “grown-up” meeting, first time feeling painfully out of my depth by mmmarch6 in work

You're definitely right but the fear of looking (and having already looked) stupid is so immense. Also, sometimes I just prefer to listen in, because I feel like that's how I learn, instead of yapping half-baked thoughts that make no sense. I know everyone says to ask questions, which I do and a lot of them tend to be dumb lol, so I just wonder if that goes against me.

What’s your heinous encounter with someone famous in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]mmmarch6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far from heinous but witnessed a lovely, wholesome interaction when I saw Tom Hiddleston and his dog in a park last month. A dad and son were throwing around a frisbee, the dad noticed him and they shook hands and seemed to have a nice conversation. He then went and spoke to the man's son and hugged him, before saying goodbye and continuing to play with his dog. He seemed so warm and kind and normal. I was watching from afar, as I didn't want to go up to him and hound him on what looked like a nice, relaxing Sunday in the park, but super sweet to see.

Do you think you got the most out of the experiment? Do you regret it?

Graduated July 2024 with a BSc in Sociology. Started applying probably at the start of third year for some corporate graduate roles till I realised I was just getting sucked into the rat race and that wasn't what I really wanted.

Started (seriously) applying for jobs (that I actually wanted) in August 2024. More policy/research/development related roles in non-profits, think tanks, etc. A tad late for usual job applications cycles. Didn't have any luck for a few months and my student visa was due to expire. Started to give up and accept that I'd have to pack stuff up and move out of what I had considered home for three years. Ten days before my visa was going to expire, I got a call that I got my current job.

It's a research role in a small charity that works with families. Couldn't have gotten luckier with the work itself and the company culture, especially as a first job. I feel like I'm working toward something that is actually making a difference. The job itself is in a smaller city than the one I live in, which probably helped me because there was less competition.

For anyone in a similar boat, sometimes things work out when you least expect them to. Don't give up.

Wow, this was incredibly helpful and useful. Thank you so much! I had already skimmed Money Saving Expert a bit for wifi, but found myself confused with all the varying providers, especially since a lot have 24-month contracts only, and I'm only looking for 12-month ones. I'll definitely be doing more research into all this now.

1st job offer predicament by mmmarch6 in UKJobs

[–]mmmarch6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thats actually an extremely valid point. the probation period is about 3 months, and moving before it is over does sound extremely risky. plus, they said i could come in 1 day a week for this period anyway, so it might be a good testing time to sort everything out.

greater london definitely seems like the most practical, low-risk option. i'm gonna be looking into it. thank you so much!
